In what order is the Lord of the Rings series intended to be read?

Am I supposed to read The Hobbit first, or am I supposed to read the first Lord of the Rings book first?

only after reading the tintillating Hobbit did I go off to find the trilogy...sure am glad my 7th grade teacher put Tolkien on the book report list
