In trouble - might not fit

Okay so I got my fan in today

sitting inside the case (Lian Li PCV800) it has room on top of it. I dont have the mobo yet so how much room should I compensate for on top?

that said, when in its place there is a fan on the top of the computer case which touches the Zalman heatsink/fan....and i might have to really push hard to get the case closed....though without a mother board right now its all guesses - but the top fan is definately going to cause me a problem in a few days

so what should i do? is there a lower profile AM2 fan out there? lower profile fan for the top of the case?

Does your HSF extend beyond the theoretical edge of your imaginery mobo?

If so, just pretend it fits...

so it doesnt matter if its a bit crumpled?

its a height problem, not width - so no problems falling off the dge. how much room is there generally between the top of the mobo and the case floor? because flush against the floor its being pressed by the case fan.

Ah, okay... I forgot! You've got that oddball L² HTPC case.

An oversized flower fan probably won't fit, without doing some surgery.

i got out the measuring tape and figured it out

case is 14.5cm interior height
zalman 12.5cm
space between mobo and case floor, roughly 0.5cm
stock case fan - 2.5cm!

so that puts me 1cm over

if i can get a 10mm case fan to replace it with ill have 5mm extra space to work with

otherwise it looks like ill need a shorter HSF, like the Arctic Cooling ALPINE64 or something

another question:

does it matter how much space is between the HS and the roof of the case?

would it be better to have a down-up facing HSF rather than a front to back one, with a fan above it?
eg. would it be better to have one blowing down on it and the other blowing back? or would it be better to have two fans blowing down on the cpu?

Not at all. I have one of those sitting on my Biostar Tforce 550 with a Sempron underneath it. Last I checked, that was a socket AM2 motherboard.

The center lug on socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2 are all the same. Any HSF that clips onto only the center lug and who's base does not extend past the "stock" area will fit on any of these sockets. One prime example would be any retail box HSF.

Most aftermarket "higher end" HSFs have proprietary mounts that require removing the stock mounting bracket and bolting through the motherboard. With those, there is a compatibility issue between the "older" sockets and AM2.
