In the States, do you get paid to donate blood?

You might get paid for giving plasma or platelets, but I know for a fact you don't get paid for donating whole blood. (hence the term "donating")

there used to be cash incentives at some places, sometimes other incentives and gifts if you donated. after the AIDs thing came along and the blood supply had to be treated much more carefully, it became illegal for you to give someone any sort of incentive for blood donation. juice and cookies are ok though

it may have been before that, but i remember distinctly reading about those laws around when AIDs and STDs became big

We used to get a beer (double stout) after donating. that was a couple of years back.
I haven't been allowed to donate since I got sent to East Timour for peace keeping. All the anti nasties they injected us with.

But there are several places which pay for plasma donations.

Any ideas why they pay for plasma vs whole blood?

Plasma donations:
- take longer (45-60 minutes vs 15 or so for whole blood), so fewer people make this time "commitment"
- are particularly useful for burn victims
- the quantity of plasma drawn would take 8 - 10 pints of blood for equivalent volume.

I think the last bullet is the main reason some places pay for plasma.

I've donated plasma for years and never been paid. I wouldn't take the money - though I have taken a couple of extra packs of cookies for the kiddies.
