In the really old days, how did shipbuilders bend the wood for the hull of their boat?

I know today you can bend wood for a hull by steaming it or dousing it with harmful chemicals, but how did they do it in the days of, say, the 15th Century or earlier?

How did they do anything years ago? I mean yeah, we're pretty smart now, but those people did some amazing things without machines or modern technology, you gotta admit.

they would hang the planks over the edge of the world whilst striking them with bending magicks of the sea dragons that resided there.

They peed on the wood while people at the other end held the wood down to shape it.

The pee helps soften the wood by being acidic enough.

when we built my dad's boat, the only high-tech thing on the steambox was a 55 gal. barrel and two 3/4" pipe with an elbow. the rest was wood planks.
Just scale it up to bend bigger wood, longer times.

They did a quick demo of bending planks to repair the USS Constitution on This Old House. Not sure how long ago though.

Yup, and that's why it took so long to build one, given that they were pretty much just nailing wood together.

Caulked with rags or rope or somesuch, driven in with chisel-like tools and wooden mallets. The hull then soaked up a bunch of water, the wood expanded and tightened itself up. Putting a boat back in the water that had dried out for a while was a risky business.
