in the NBA, when did 3 Seconds become a DEFENSIVE violation?!?

I have never seen this call (because I really don't like the NBA much at all anymore) but I have been following the playoff games this year somewhat, and I saw this call happen last night on the Lakers/Suns game.

This is downright the DUMBEST rule I have ever seen in the league! I mean illegal defense was dumb, but I think they got rid of that call once they decided "oh, zones are allowed in the NBA now".

But to have defensive 3 seconds a violation? come on ... please ... that is the dumbest rule ever. How long has it been that way?

That rule was started when they brought the zone into the NBA. Its to keep from having a big man planted in the paint the entire game on defense.

A couple of years ... it prevents the bigs from camping out right under the basket. It really doesn't get called that much, but it helps to keep some lanes open.

Oh okay so it basically is the "new" illegal defense call?

I remember when they took out the old illegal defense call a few years ago, didn't know this was a result of it.

It's a pretty damn stupid rule. On defense you should be able to do whatever you please as long as you aren't fouling, to stop the opponent.

dumb rule, but not as dumb as the "no charge" circle in the lane.

Try watching a game with 7ft tall twin towers permanently camped out under the rim, and you'd think otherwise. With zone defenses, this is necessary to keep the game even mildly interesting.

It's like the 24 second clock or the removal of the blue lines in the NHL. It keeps the game moving on the court so it doesn't get stagnant.

No you shouldn't. The game would be imbalanced if good centers could camp in the lane.

It's only a 3 second violation if no one on offense is within arm's length, BTW. Unlike offensive 3 seconds where it doesn't matter what you are doing in the lane.

This is true ... if your man is standing just outside the key, you can stay inside as long as you're within approximately arms length.

Aah okay well that is okay then. I thought like if someone was posting up on you downlow, and you are in the paint but they aren't in the paint, that you have to move after 3 seconds.
