Of course this had to be me...

First allow me to say: My condolences, sympathies, and prayers to all families, including the Kennedy family, that are battling and have battled cancer, no doubt one of the toughest challenges any person and family can face.

Now then...

"Chappaquiddick incident" is the name given to the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, a former campaign worker for the assassinated U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy of New York, and the surrounding circumstances.
In July of 1969, Kopechne's body was discovered inside an overturned Oldsmobile belonging to Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy of Massachusetts under water in a tidal channel on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts.
After the body was found, Kennedy gave a statement to police saying that on the previous night he had taken a wrong turn and accidentally driven his car off a bridge into the water.
Later, he pled guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury; he received a suspended sentence.

Kennedy's initial statement:

At 10 am Kennedy entered the police station in Edgartown, made a couple of phone calls, then dictated a statement to his aide Paul Markham, which was then given to the police. The statement ran as follows:

?On July 18, 1969, at approximately 11:15 p.m. in Chappaquiddick, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, I was driving my car on Main Street on my way to get the ferry back to Edgartown. I was unfamiliar with the road and turned right onto Dike Road, instead of bearing hard left on Main Street. After proceeding for approximately one-half mile on Dike Road I descended a hill and came upon a narrow bridge. The car went off the side of the bridge. There was one passenger with me, one Miss Mary [Kopechne],[17] a former secretary of my brother Sen. Robert Kennedy. The car turned over and sank into the water and landed with the roof resting on the bottom. I attempted to open the door and the window of the car but have no recollection of how I got out of the car. I came to the surface and then repeatedly dove down to the car in an attempt to see if the passenger was still in the car. I was unsuccessful in the attempt. I was exhausted and in a state of shock. I recall walking back to where my friends were eating. There was a car parked in front of the cottage and I climbed into the backseat. I then asked for someone to bring me back to Edgartown. I remember walking around for a period and then going back to my hotel room. When I fully realized what had happened this morning, I immediately contacted the police."

Just a friendly reminder, as we are all bombarded by "Saint Kennedy" propaganda, that he (and nearly all) politicians can be grouped into one or more categories of crooks, thieves, liars, and perhaps even murderers...but of course the courts will rarely punish as such:

On July 25, seven days after the incident, Kennedy entered a plea of guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. Kennedy's attorneys suggested that any jail sentence should be suspended, and the prosecutors agreed to this, citing Kennedy's age, character and prior reputation. Judge James Boyle sentenced Kennedy to two months' incarceration, the statutory minimum for the offense, which he suspended. In announcing the sentence, Boyle referred to Kennedy's "unblemished record" and said that he "has already been, and will continue to be punished far beyond anything this court can impose".

Okay P&N: have at it!

Bad form bringing that up right now. As far as the Chappaquiddick incident, Kennedy has just met his maker so to speak. He probably had some 'splainin to do about that one. It isn't our place to judge anymore...

Say what you want, but the guy ran a car off a bridge and left someone to die. These boards have defined plenty of people by their weakest moments so why should members of the "royal" family be any different.

Why? Bringing up the fact that Ted Kennedy got away with murder/manslaughter because of his status is disrespectful how? It's not like he ever got "punished" for his crime.

i hope if GT kills a young women and uses family fame, political allies to get out of the murder charge that people will continue to bring it up. not only when he is dead but every fucking day GT decides to open his mouth. until GT does such things you can't even compare anything GT has done to murder.

Indeed. OP, I could care less for this man in life or in death but there's been years and years to hash and rehash this shit. Give it a fucking rest.

The instant the car went into the water, all he could think about was his political future. :|

So, in your opion, political correctness = I should keep my mouth shut?

Sounds like the end of democratic debate to me.

hmm forgot about that one. I should revise it to say probably why he never made it to the oval office. Of course after our last batch of presidents it probably would not have mattered.

When he dies he will probably have a nice and quiet service with friends relatives and neighbors, NOT A FVCKING MEDIA LOVEFEST rubbing it in everyone's face if they like it or now. I mean turn to any channel on radio or TV all you will hear is about him, and how great he was. Its the media that's forcing all this discussion and when a discussion at this level starts, its definitely going to bring up the bad things too.
IMO all he was a politician who didn't like to loose and easiest way to do it was tap into the untouched minority votes. He was the pioneer in the US politics of "working for minorities" and staying in power.

I think what I don't like is the labeling of Chappaquiddick as some sort of mistake; that is was just a "misstep" in this man's careful walk along the straight and narrow. I'm sorry, but I can't see it like that.

I have respect for people who disagree with my principles. But the man committed negligent homicide (and that's being generous), and then used his political clout to slither out of punishment, and retained his political office. That's pretty sick.

as i said in another thread. The guy should have been in jail. but i do respect what he did with his life after it. for good or ill he did a lot for the US. and for that i honor the guy.

i am not going to cannonize the guy like many are just because he is dead.

Chappaquiddick was previously brought up in about every other negative post in the original thread on Kennedy,s death.

Chappaquiddick is also brought up about every five minutes on Fox News in every story they have on Kennedy-on an alternating cycle between allusions to his post-divorce, pre-remarriage heavy drinking years.

Odds are Chappaquiddick happened before the OP was even born.

Rightwingers are obsessed about Chappaquiddick and continue to conclude the worst possible inferences are cold hard proven fact, despite a total lack of foundation to do so.

Kennedy was also for health care reform...... just don't touch his insurance plan.

Kennedy was for clean energy...... but not in his backyard.

Kennedy exemplified what is wrong with out political process.
