In the matket for a spiffy computer desk

I've been looking at various stores that sell desks and I haven't been too impressed by what I see. I figured that if I saw a desk I really, really liked, I would be happy to spend extra on shipping and order one online.

Are there any desks out there that have some nifty features? Or just look really cool and work well for computers?

Lets see them!

I have a similar problem. I have a mitsubishi 22" CRT monitor and a MS keyboard with the gray thing built on the front, and the 2 are 30" from front to back with the keyboard pushed up againt the monitor. My girlfriend wants to get me a desk for xmas, and i cant find any at all that are deep enough. All the ones at staples, officemax, office depot, etc are 29 1/2 inches deep at the max. I know that i can have it sit 3 or 4 inches off the wall and be ok, but i was hoping to find a desk that was at least 36" deep to give me about 5 or 6 inches in front of the keyboard. All the 36" deep desks are special order and cost over $500. We are only trying to spend 300-400.

Mine was not originally a desk but I made it and it can be remade for a few bucks since the hardware is what cost the most. Its just 3/4" MDF with black formica laminate top, 3/4" all thread rods .

That is a 21" Sony on top and it fits perfectly....the possibilities are endless, you could make it round, square, fat , skinny, long , short add shelfs to the side , over head, add a pull-out style keyboard etc. etc.

The problem with those is that you can only fit a small computer in that "dock". In fact, most computer desks can't handle most homebuilt computer cases because the cases tend to be deeper than cases from companies like Dell or HP.

kgraeme, think about most users on this forum that are tweaking their system every other week or 2, I can't imagine taking a case in and out of that "dock" area....most people would get tired of that setup real quick....kinda cool, though not practical for most.

have you tried staples online selection?
I don't think Staples does spiffy. At least they didn't the last time I checked. ;)

BTW.. This isn't going to help much because it's discontinued now, but I bought this desk from OD a while back. I bought the silver and light maple one. It looks much better in person than in that photo. It also is strong enough to hold my Sony 21" Trinitron which was surprising. Of course, I will probably get some bowing after a while. Better switch to the LCD pretty soon. Heh.

I got it for about $50 with coupons and then I bought another one for about $20 on closeout (don't ask me how I got that deal.. Too complicated). That desk is set up in another room.

I did see another desk that I liked at Crate and Barrel for about $300 for the basic desk. The stuff I see at IKEA is pretty cool. When I go in stores like Staples, OM and OD, I really don't see much that I like. I'm pretty picky. It has to have a slide out drawer for the keyboard and that drawer has to be large enough to accomodate my mouse and keyboard. I hate having my mouse higher than my keyboard. It also has to have room to put my legs under the desk. I hate desks that have crap directly under them, so you can't stretch your legs out. I also don't like things that are too ornate or overdone. When you're dealing with particle board, less is more! I tell you though.. The laminated wood grain particle board is a ton better than it used to be. Some of it somewhat resembles wood now. I think my desk does. Much better than that dark brown wood laminate that was so prevelant in the 70's and 80's. I think BB still carries a lot of stuff with that vinyl laminate. ;)

Blah.. Blah.. Blah.. I'm just babbling. Sorry.

I have two of these making an L. Works pretty well for me. One's a 4 ft model and the other is the 6 ft. Two monitors side by side in the crotch of the L for full use of both surfaces.

I put my pics back UP. so others know what we are talking about.

....Shagga , no its not the prettiest desk and I really dont care but its very functional. I own my own business and can
afford any desk that I want, it just so happens that I put function before form. I enjoy having adjustable heights and a firm place to put my pedals.

My system
speakers , home built
QSC 900watt amp
Sony G520P 21" monitor
Athlon Xp2100+ ..blah , blah its fast
Gaming: Microsoft sidewider wheel and Intellimouse 3.0

Shagga , I put pics of mine up just to have you cut it down.

I have the Intelligent Designs desk without the "Digital Dock" built into it. I have been very happy with my desk and this thing is a beast. Right now I have not one, but two 19" monitors side-by-side on the monitor pedestal. I think it could easily fit your monitor in every way.
