In the market...

My laptop is completely fried, won't boot or anything. I've since scrapped it, and am now in the market for a new one. I had a Dell 600m 1.7GHz Centrino, and I'm looking for something similar in speed, though maybe reduced in weight. I'm, by no means, a computer person, so any help would be appreciated. Any comparable models from IBM, Toshiba, etc?

Hmm... Dell couldn't repair your laptop...? That 600m is still a current machine.

There was major water damage to all components due to flooding in my apartment, so it is completely gone. I was happy with the 600m, but I was wondering if there is something comparable that is maybe a bit better, quality-wise.

Try checking out Cnet reviews but my brother is happy with his 600M as is my other brother with his XPS.

What size screen are you looking for? There are a lot of good options in the thin-n-light category out there today, a lot for a great value. What are the main uses of your laptop? How important is battery life? Write back and we'll get you squared away

I travel alot between class, work, and home, all of which are places I use my laptop, so a small screen (<14) and light weight are imperative. Battery life is fairly important, I'd like to be able to squeeze 4+ hours out of it. I mainly use my laptop for composition, e-mail, internet surfing, with the occasional movie-watching when I'm stuck in the UC on a rainy day.

The two things that come to mind are the Dell 700M (12") and the HP dv1000 (14" widescreen). Dell's can be had with some great discounts, but I've not handled one personally so I can't speak to that. I can tell u about the dv1000 though. It is an excellent notebook for the money: Pentium M, 40-80GB HDD, CDRW or DVDRW, & with the 12-cell battery you will get 6 hours battery life easily. For a P-M 1.6, 40GB, 14" BrightView, CDRW/DVDROM, 12-cell, & 54g wifi it will run you about $1100. If you're a student, you can get educational discounts on this also. An excellent buy IMO, particularly for the battery life

averatec makes thin and light for pretty cheap, the quality is probably on par with the 600m give or take a little.

another option for you is to go for a convertible tablet??? CC has the toshiba m205 for 1300...it comes with 1.5 which is slower than ur 1.6 but only by 100mhz, 60gb hd and 512 ram

its pretty useful in class when taking notes, it changed things for me i can tell you that
