Hey all,

This has been bugging me for a while now and I keep seeing and hearing mixed reviews on each. Prior to making big purchases, I ALWAYS research for hours / days as to what would suit our needs... I'm soon to be building a high end gaming rig. My wife mentioned that she would like two displays for her studies/work (not too much photoshop involved). So now I'm caught between the TN/IPS debate.

We will need two 24" monitors -- preferably slim bezels as we will have both running side by side.

For the TN -- I see that they now have 120hz monitors available. Is this something worth vouching for, for FPS's such as BF3/4? I've just recently purchased a Samsung LED TV that is 120hz and i LOVE the difference it makes compared to a 60hz TV. I know some people hate the "realistic" look of it.. but my wife and I are stuck on it ... will never go back.

For the IPS -- The prices are higher as compared to a TN. But picture quality is best along with excellent viewing angles.. Is this only for static images? The response time apparently can cause ghosting with faster movements. With gaming in mind, this is something that I would regret purchasing if that is the case.

My budget for the gaming rig is about 2000-2500 CAD.

Thanks so much for the input!
Cheers,
Boman

24'' IPS are at a very good price/performance point right now. You can get ASUS PA248Q for ~320 USD, and Dell u2412m's for ~280 USD from Amazon, not sure what the total price w/ shipping would look like to Canada.

I use a dell u2412 as my primary gaming/working monitor, and I notice very little input lag, no ghosting, but excellent colors and contrast for both moving (games, movies) and static images. You couldn't pay me to go back to TNs. Ok, you probably could, but it would be have to be an awful lot of money.

TFTCentral has a useful review also:

Does your budget for the gaming rig include the monitors?

Are you going SLI or Xfire? If you plan on doing 3d there are compatibility questions. Also in 3d you'll need multi-gpu just to get high enough framerates. 120Hz 2d=60Hz 3d.

Modern IPS can keep up with games just fine. Depends on the panel and the scalar used, however. Bad input lag will hurt you badly on any fps/racing game. Also, you may need multi-gpu setups if you go the 2560x1xxx route.

If you go for U2412m, do keep in mind Dell has sold it directly from their site for $249 a number of times in the past couple months.

Yeah! I've also on occasion seen a sub-600 two 2412s + a double-display stand deal on their website also.

Keep your eyes peeled.

I guess the question is how high end it's going to get and what else you do apart from gaming.

120hz as far as gaming is concerned is, IMO, of debatable benefit. And going with a TN panel, just a slight slouch can render dark details temporarily invisible due to the inevitably poor vertical view angles.

I still have a VG278H and while it's not a terrible all-purpose monitor, I've now got it hung off a rarely-used PC - as I've found that for the gaming I do (and OK, I'm not that rabid about it) from a rig I'd like to be all-purpose, I prefer a decent IPS monitor - and as a secondary reason I also like moar pixels in a 27", FHD is a bit low for me these days.
