also my inlaw has a 42" HP i tihnk it looks like ******.

I went with a LCD. Some factors that influenced me.

1. My living room has lots of windows and is very bright. LCDs seem to far better in this environment due to the glare.

2. Weight. My LCD is wall mounted to top of the fireplace.

3. Heat. Plasma run much hotter. Did I mentioned my LCD is a top my fireplace?

I heard Plasma had a better picture quality, but to be truthful, I couldn't tell a difference. My 40" Sony is just superb.

Some things I *wish* I had considered before the purchased though. Definitely go for a HDTV with more than one HDMI input. Most of the older models only have one along with composite video.
