I was in the same boat as you, considering a new car as a midlife crisis present to myself. I was driving a 2000 Chrysler 300M, and I was looking at the Cadillac CTS Coupe, Audi A6/S6, and the updated Chrysler 300's.

I ended up choosing the 2012 Chrysler 300S, probably due to brand loyalty and the other options costing $8-15K more once I started spec'ing them out. So far loving the car and as far as I know, I'm the only one driving one in Anchorage ;)

if you're looking at the ZL1, do yourself a favor and wait for the new GT500. 650hp and 200mph from the factory.

CTS-V is also an excellent choice. it will blow the doors off of the RS4/S6/RS6 from a performance standpoint. you might not have quite the same interior, but im not an dash stroker.

personally, i'd advise against getting a rare twin turbo vehicle (RS6 new or old, etc.) unless you can unquestionably afford any potential maintenance issues that may arise.

Caymen or Lotus Elise. One of those is my next car! Both are a blast to drive!

Mustang Langua Seca would be hard to beat for a mid-life crisis car, and it's ready to go for the track, too. :)

Drive to wheels fall off in your category is equal to high maintenance.

If you truly want that, get an Accord.

A lightweight, good handling, rear wheel car such as the Miata, S2000 or the upcoming BRZ will be much fun to drive than any of the pony cars.

All the pony cars mentioned here are pigs in terms of the weight, which kills the fun factor.

This kind of choice is so personal I think it's impossible to ask a forum. I have had more than my share of cars in life thus far and I have gone all over. I LOVE big V8s and their raw power. I LOVE small turbocharged I4s and their advanced power. Everything has it's place. Putting my foot on the floor of my V8 engine is as fun as boost in my turbo cars. What do YOU want? Do you want a mundane car that has balls? Do you want a dedicated car for power? Having gone both ways, I like having a car with 4 seats that can haul ass.

You can get an idea of which direction he is leaning from the seed list. That's why for performance at that price range I suggested something like a GT500 instead of a Lotus. He seemed geared more towards larger high power with good handling than light with much lower power and amazing handling.

How about something a bit more unique like this?

'08 Porsche 911 Carrera S Kompressor
http://inventory.racperformance.com/web/used/Porsche-911-2008-Dallas-Texas/884680/

I usually check out the inventory at RAC every 6 months or so to drool and dream. They have some very exotic and unique options.

'99 Viper GTS?

Edit: Just realized you are in Dallas area so you could head over to check these vehicles out in person
