Im talking like home DVD player not computer DVD player. I want one that will read CD-R's(VCD's), Doesnt need anything to fancy just a basic player that will read VCD's. So whats the best deal right now?

i got an "AMX" bottom of the line DVD player the other day for $99, it works for me...digital out is the most important thing...i hear that Sonys don't play a lot of the copied DVD's at Blockbuster, i find that hard to believe.

Most all read Cd-R's, some newer ones read MP3's(like a more expensive "AMX"), so you can pack like 600 songs onto 1 CD!!! - Not that anyone would really want to do that.

best inexpensive DVD player:

Panasonic DVD-RV31

followed by Pioneer DVD-343

My family just got a Pioneer DV-343 player, and we can't complain for that price ($300 CAN, so around $200US)... picture quality is great, and even though it doesnt say on the box, it's actually an all-region player... which means you can play DVDs from anywhere in the world...

yep, it can play DVDs from any region without having it modded... that's why my family got that one also... we tried it with a DVD from Asia right after we took it home from the store, and it played fine...

We got it from London Drugs for $329CAN... but then a couple of weeks later Vision had a flyer out with that same player for $298... so we took the flyer to London Drugs and got the difference back... try vision, they may still have that player for less than $300CAN...

I second kami's suggestion in getting the Panasonic or check out the Toshiba SD1200 or SD1600.

<< Panasonic electonics are such a peices of crap, maybe worse than "AMX"!

>>

you bought some $99 wal-mart dvd player and you are calling the RV31 crap? it's the best budget dvd player out there IMO (it's a new 2001 model)...ask anyone who knows anything about home theater stuff. damn, you are ignorant. panny's are recognized as some of the best dvd players out there..

RossMAN, yeah Toshiba's are pretty good units too. I actually considered a SD1600 at one point.

BTW, I've seen the RV31 for $329 Canadian, so a little more than the Pioneer but worth it IMO. And if you are really anal like me, the Panasonic doesn't have the chroma upsampling problem, while the Pioneer does. This creates color banding-like effects with certain colors. I used to have some links with screenshots...if I find them I'll post it.

hmm, no. I agree completely with Kami. I have the Pioneer 333, which is basically the same as the 343 except it's the older model, and I love it. If the Panasonic had been out when I bought mine, I probably would of went with that. The Toshiba are nice also, but they have problems with CDR.

Kami, what's that chroma problem you're talking about? I never noticed anything wrong with mine, it looks very good using the component out.

Except for the first Toy Story picture, I really can't see what's wrong with the other pictures. (it doesn't really help that they're 2 inches big) Anyways, if the Panasonic is the same price, get it, but like the article says, you shouldn't stop yourself from buying a player because of the "bug".

From what I read in the hometheaterforum it's more noticeable on progressive players.

why not the apex 500W from wal*mart for 98.98..the panosonic rv31k from amazon is a good deal, and beside it's made in japan..electronics made in japan tend to last longer than those made in china, taiwan, etc.
