In the grand scheme of the military, how elite is the Army Ranger?

A bit of a silly question, but how elite is the Army Ranger? For example, I'm aware that the Marine infantryman is likely to go through a more rigorous traning regimen than the typical Army infantryman (or so I think). But say one in the Army takes it to the next level and goes to Ranger school (and gets in), would you say that he is certainly more elite than the typical Marine infantryman?

I heard somewhere that Rangers aren't as elite as Marine Recon/SEALS/Delta but thats what i hear and ive never been in the military.

Rangers don't go through the training a SEAL, Delta, Recon, SAS, or the more "elite" forces go through, but it's certainly well and beyond what the normal infantryman in any branch of the military goes through.

From what I've seen the SEAL training involing lots of water time seams to be the more difficult. I love to swim. However I do not wish to be in the water for 16+ hours amongst the other torture they provide seal trainee's.

On a side note. I do think that these people knew what they were getting into going into this training. I also salute them for being so brave.

Rangers are pretty hardcore. It's definately an elite group.

From what I gather, Deltas don't officially exist according to the government, but they're selected as the best of the best in the Army.

I am aware that they are not of the level of Delta Force or the Marine's Force Recon or the Navy SEALs. I guess they are a bit different though. As for the "water" part, there is a pretty intense underwater phsycial test that each Ranger must go through. I asked these questions only because I have been thinking about giving it a shot when I graduate. I've read the physical demands and I can indeed pass each and every one of them (I would link them, but I'm at school right now) except I have no clue how I would do swimming 50 meters with all my gear, gun, boots, without surfacing, and without showing fear.

Seals have to learn at least as much as the Rangers, and then some more about water things. They also have to hold their breath for what, to me, seems like an insane amount of time.

Check out what they have to do:

And you would be wrong. They go through more intense training than standard marines.

Ummm... no. Rangers are more adept than Marines. Not to take away from the Marines (who are awesome), but they just aren't. The special forces units - whatever branch they're with - are hardcore. If you put 50 Rangers and 50 SEALs in a room and let them duke it out, it's a 50/50 toss-up as to who would win. However, if you put 50 Marines in a room with 50 Rangers, you can bet the Rangers would come out on top (unless you just happened to get some very skilled Marines). The important thing to remember is that they're all heroes, and they could all beat the crap out of you.

A good friend of mine is a Ranger, and he and his partner finished 2nd a few years ago in the Best Ranger competition that can be seen on ESPN/ESPN2 sometimes. I've seen the video of some of stuff that he and his partner had to do, and it was pretty hardcore.

All of the Elite forces have a purpose, Rangers operate in larger groups than Seals or Green Berets. If you want to take an airport or climb a moutain to take a hilltop you use Rangers. If you want to probe a beach for mines and cut barb wire you use Seals. If the mission is to live with the locals and train them use the Green Berets. If you want to recon an enemy city or site targets in enemy territory use Marine force recon. If you want to kidnap a African dictator use Delta. All of them have more intense training than regular front line troops. :)
