In Star Trek, the Golden Gate Bridge is still standing. Does that seem strange to anyone?

It's 300 years into the future. They're traveling through space faster than the speed of light. They still need bridges?

You obviously need something for the hover cars to float on.

EDIT: You're also looking way too much into this. It's a fictional series.

It's probably there the same reason that we keep other landmarks in good shape over time.

Thank you. I've been looking for a location to build a new Starbuck's but the historical society said no.

screw those pyramids, we already have them pictured on our beer labels, we don't need the real things!

That's not the Golden Gate Bridge. An alien ship crash-landed where it used to be, and by coincidence, their ships look just like suspension bridges.

The Golden Gate Bridge isn't one of the 7 Wonders of the World. ;) I'm just wondering if Star Trek ever mentioned why the bridge is still standing or if it's just accepted that it's there.

It is a marvel of engineering, considering it has been there for 70 years already. I think the idea is that we are supposed to preserve it as a testament to those who built it when the automobile is no longer needed.

Knowing how stupidly sappy Star Trek is, they would probably preserve it as a monument to the automobile and the pollution it created.

It's because it wasn't blown up in WWIII. It's considered a great engineering feat and they preserve it just like any other monument. Also, Starfleet Headquarters is in San Fransisco, so they want to keep the city looking a certain way

ever though of transporters? I'm surprised they all aren't really fat. who need to walk to the fridge when you can order your computer to replicate and transport your pizza directly onto your lap while you're sitting down in front of the monitor?

i imagine the golden gate bridge is there since it's a landmark.

If you don't need something, you don't necessarily have to blow it up. But only people '300' years in the future know that.

you're talking about the episode where wesley and the rest of nova squadron are answering for josh's death whenever they tried doing some fancy schmancy maneuver, right? the one that was on last night...

i'm sure 300 years from now, the golden gate bridge will probably be renovated or rebuilt or something, it'll still be the golden gate bridge. it might not be THE golden gate bridge, but it'll be the golden gate bridge.

The First Duty - Kolvoord Starburst :p
(I just watched that one off DVD)
I always have a hard time not thinking of Josh as Tom Paris during it ;)

I was thinking that another prominent time it's shown in the series is in Star Trek IV (both when they go back and time and when the Bird of Prey is crashing)
279 years in the future according to some random website :p (361 for Season 5 TNG)

Yeah, there are a lot of things that wouldn't be necessary in the future, but they still stick around. I think the main reason to have it in there was because they actually filmed the TNG part on location at that waste treatment plant or whatever it was and the bridge was really in the background. Might as well actually have it in the picture since you want the viewers to know where you are.

Oh and http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Golden_Gate_Bridge

hmmm ok... well I guess the water reclamation plant is in Van Nuys actually

We can launch space shuttles, so I guess we don't need airplanes or boats anymore.

And how about we just demolish all historic structures, we don't technically need them so we may as well demolish them.

Did you stop to consider that maybe it's considered a historic monument by that age? That would be like tearing down the Pyramids since the Egyptians no longer have pharaohs.

They require electric streetcars on every street and leather shops on every corner! All hail the gay capital!

Every mega disaster movie that I know of has a scene in which the Golden Gate Bridge is obliterated.

Yes, I guess it hadn't occurred to me that we'd want to preserve the Golden Gate Bridge was a monument. Thanks for setting me straight guys. :)
