They can figure out cloaks, in fact there was a ship that had it. The Federation agreed not to persue cloaking technology as some sort of agreement with other governments. IIRC anyway.

There was an episode where a Federation ship was testing cloaking stuff and decloaked partway inside an asteroid.

Yeah, badass episode. The federation was testing a cloak despite it being against the treaty or whatever...and not only did the federation figure out cloaks, they one upped everyone else by building a cloak that could pass through matter as well. In your face, Romulans!

They can see cloaked ships though, if they're looking for them. There are several episodes that deal with this, and ST: Nemesis has a bit on it as well.

The company that makes the panels also makes dermal regenerators. Big conflict of interest thing going on there.

Why is it that anything that happens to the ship causes it to shake? I choose to ignore all the cheese and watch the show anyway.
Yeah, the intertial dampers can counter the incredible acceleration of going to warp, or even just to impulse, yet a small asteroid or something hitting the ship causes a shudder.

best show ever.

There are a lot of things that should happen in the show but dont...to make a good show. Have to suspend belief and just go with the flow of things.

Like...if 2 of the 3 races have cloaks..and have had cloaks for a long ass time...why dont the federation have cloaks and why cant they figure out a way to see them. They can figure out how to go through time and open a portal in a matter of minutes in a brainstorming session using a bunch of funny talk...but they cant figure out cloaks...

my favorite argument in star trek stuff is the STvsSW argument. Star Wars would OMGWTFBBQ pwn them. Speaking of star wars...HBO has been showing them for the past month..ive watched 4 5 and 6 like 2 times each.
Starfleet agreed not to research cloaking technology as part of a treaty with the Romulans.
The Defiant was loaned a Romulan cloaking device for use only in the Gamma Quadrant, but with the Dominion Wars, that restriction seems to have been relaxed a bit.

Star Wars vs Star Trek:
Star Wars is very much pure fantasy. Each starfighter supposedly has reactors in the hundreds or thousands of gigawatts range. By that measure, an X-wing could probably take on a few Galaxy Class starships and win.
Star Trek at least tries to work some theory into the show, assuming there's not a writer's strike.

Still, from a military standpoint, it makes no sense. Why would the Federation ever agree to such a stupid treaty that would put them at such a disadvantage?

I don't see why consoles should explode at all, glass or no glass.

Isn't the computer(s) buried somewhere else on the ship? So there's only the touch screen plus power and data cables - no explosives there.

I believe the Federation had an agreement with the Romulans and Klingons not to develop cloak technology.

As for seeing them... well, they wouldn't be very good cloak technology if people could see through them

it's one of the stupid things they do that you have to just accept as part of the show. i mean whenever the big honkin' chunk of metal that is a starship is hit, the effects somehow always manifest themselves in the form of users' panels exploding in their faces. it's the 24th century and they can't freakin prevent their instrument panels from exploding in their faces :)

i mean does your car console explode in your face when there's a severe head-on impact? ;)

Because it would end a costly war, and that was part of what the Romulans demanded.

It's called an "intuitive interface." Why waste extra screen space on a window that says "OMG TEH BORGZ LOL!!!11!" when you can have the panel explode and very visibly communicate to the entire bridge crew that something's really wrong?
