in search of new EMAIL

Story in short; got sick of dealing with popups and spam from swiss cheese M$ apps, so now I try to only use web based accounts, and these are move convenient also. Was using dmail and recentely had a "snag" with them.

What is the most reliable way to send and receive email? I would like pop3 suggestions as well as web-based email suggestions. If pop3, I would like to be able to change the message archive location.

Let me know what you ppl use

The best thing to do is register your own domain name and get a cheap hosting or e-mail hosting service

I'd agree with the above, because the free web-based services are falling. I check my rh71.com mail through POP3 but my webhost provides a web interface also. Depends how much you want to spend, if anything at all.

Hotmail does still allow POP3 access via Outlook Express (I think it's pretty reliable). Other free services like Netzero are reliable but will soon no longer offer POP3 access. Yahoo is spam haven and you need a 3rd party app (Web2Pop or YahooPops) to get POP3 to work. Zapo.net was reliable for me when I used them... and apparently they still have POP3 access.

I haven't had experience with other web based services that allow POP3.

I highly recommend Fastmail.fm. Their free service gets your web-based access (in a year or so of use, I have yet to receive any spam) and their one-time ~$15 account gets you IMAP/SMTP so you can use any modern e-mail client.

Another vote for Fastmail. I've used a bunch of email services in the past, and all found ways to piss me off..then I came across FM. Love story of my life. Sad really.

this is what i can never get ...
how does registering my own domain name help me run away from spammers?

let's say i have my email address at blah@blahblah, and i use it for personal mails.
then come spammers and they start sending spams to me at the above address..
now what do i do?

sure, i can create blah2@blahblah, blah3@blahblah, etc... but doesn't that imply making new email address that i have to advertise to my friends again?

or... did i just get it wrong?
ie. getting own domain does not equal to running away from spammers?

I think it's a never ending problem... if you're smart enough to keep your e-mail address private and not register software with it or anything like that, someone who has your address may not be. And as soon as another worm makes it way around the internet, your address gets spread all over the place. I think it's pretty much a lost cause... I just use Thunderbird to filter all the junk out... it does a fairly good job, but even after about 3 months of using it, it hasn't adapted perfectly, every now and then I still get junk mail that doesn't get moved to the junk mail folder until I mark it as junk.

*EDIT* Actually, I have a Yahoo e-mail address and the bulk mail filter works very well... sure I get lots of bulk mail, but it all ends up in the bulk mail folder and I never have to look at it if I don't want to. The only thing I don't like is the limited amount of space... I signed up back when they gave out 6 MB mail boxes, so I have 6 MB... but it fills up quickly... I wish there was a way to store old message locally with Yahoo. That's the only thing preventing me from using Yahoo for everything... that and the fact that some places won't let you register on their site with a yahoo address. But since I have my own domain I could just set up a forwarder.

I havent had any spams to emails on private domains..
I use yahoo to check some pops that I still tote around

Speaking of email, why doesnt the anandtech forums email me when the thread is updated?
didnt see a setting for it in the profile. Is there somewhere to change that and my lame avatar?
