I recently purchased a DVICO HDTV RT7 Gold Tv tuner card and i havent been that impressed with it. The software isnt very good that comes with it and its incompatible with Vista. I havent tried it in linux yet but im guessing its the same story.

What im looking for is this:
A card that has very good support/drivers/compability with vista
doesnt have to have any HDTV support, comcast puts a block on it so it doesnt matter to me.
Something that alot of poeple have so the chances are that it can work in linux.

I also want to use to it transfer VHS to DVD but im guessing any card is able to do that.

I bought a VBOXCOMM Cats Eye 164E internal PCI-EXPRESS ATSC HDTV Tuner card after a lot of research last year when Vista came out.

At the time it was one of the few Vista 64-bit compatible card and it has worked flawlessly since install last spring.

The only drawback to it is that it does not support CABLECARD or whatever the digital cable television standard is. This is not a problem for me as I use it strictly to pick up free OTA (over the air) HDTV broadcasts from my local area.

It was expensive but the only product on the market at that time.

Huappage has since come out with some ~ $100 ATSC HDTV cards and they were a quality brand back in the standard definition NTSC days.

I caught this device (http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/s.../Video/prod/AVC-3610/) on woot ages ago and have loved it. If you're looking for a dual tuner with dual composite inputs, plus a remote, that works great with Vista, VMC, SageTV, BeyondTV, MythTV, name it. It's short on support, and it's quite long in the tooth and probably hard to find but I have really loved it. I recently though threw in an Avermedia A180 and have loved that. It worked right away when I installed it and with the new VMC TV Pack it is even better. Hope that helps.
