Hello all,

I have voicestream right now (contract's up) and I ain't too happy with it.

However I love my phone (Samsung q105). It's GSM.

I want to switch to another carrier on a GSM network.

I called Voicestream and they told me I can call cingular or whoever to unlock my phone.

Is cingular any good in NYC?

what other carriers use GSM?

gsm is at&t, voicestream, and cingular, afaik. there is also talk of a merger between those three companies, or some combination.

AT&T isn't GSM everywhere....they are converting, I don't know what markets they are in. They are still TDMA in the Philadelphia market.

Uhh, the original provider must unlock the phone...there's an email along the lines of simunlock@voicestream.com (or something like that) that you can request the unlock code from. Just a word of warning...I recently purchased a Q105 to try to use with Cingular, and for some odd reason refused to work with it. It was subsidy unlocked and worked fine with both T-mobile and Voicestream SIM's, but no go for Cingular SIM's. Good luck. :)

see if you can find an mBus cable for your phone and look for unlocking programs. It's risky to unlock your phone by yourself because if you do it wrong you could damage it. check here these guys are all phone nerds and they can help you unlock your phone. If you ask around they could provide you with a link of how to do it or the software.
Good Luck

Edit: check cellphoneshop.net for an mBus cable not sure if they carry it for your phone but its worth a shot.

Well, Verizon has the best coverage in the NY/NJ area... I think AT&T piggybacks on Verizon's network in my area... I'm not quite sure. Unfortunately, I don't think there are many GSM carriers in NYC metro... Sprint is on their own PCS crap and Cingular I think also piggybacks... so like Verizon or AT&T seem to be your only choices to keep your phone. Damn, cell phone carriers suck in NYC metro... and they're jacking the prices too! It's like a damn monopoly... oh wait, it is...
