In need of new 40mm fan.

😕

I have a Gigabyte SINXP1394 motherboard. On boot up from cold, the fan currently cooling the chipset (never been removed) makes an awful, awful noise. After a short time the noise stops, but I'm not very comfortable with a fan on my PC making such a noise at all.

So I need to buy a replacement. However I am not 100% sure what fan I should get. Having removed the fan I have established it's a ?Colorful CF ? 12410S DC12VF Sleeve Bearing 40mm x 40mm x 10mm'.

What would the current equivalent of this fan would be so I can purchase a new one?

I have looked on web sites such as Overlockers.co.uk and have found fans like this (the top one):

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_YS_Tech_60.html

This would appear to be the correct replacement, however I am hesitant to commit because I have never before replaced this fan.

Here is a photo of the fan in situ:

I know this seems like a relatively simple matter, but I would be grateful for any advice. 🙂

You might just want to get a good passive heatsink - no fan to worry about then. The Zalman ZM-NB47J is a 40mm heatsink, which seems to be getting great reviews everywhere. Does better than some heatsink+fan combos.

Yes, the fans they put on those NB coolers are usually cheap crap. If you really want to replace the fan instead of going with a good passive as mentioned by Rod (which I also recommend) then look for a good brand ball-bearing fan of about the same amperage and cfm. Some good brands are: Sanyo-Denki, Panaflo (Panasonic/Matsush1ta), Sunon, Delta, YS-Tech. Some good fan resellers are: thermalfx.com, sidewindercomputers.com, svc.com, jab-tech.com, bgmicro.com (BGMicro is an odd-lot parts seller so their fans often come with no connector or a non-pc connector so you may have to be able to mod them to your needs - perhaps you could cut and splice to the original connector).
. The fan you linked to doesn't mention whether it is ball or sleeve bearing - you want ball bearings if you don't want to have to replace again soon. The connector on it isn't mentioned either - you need two-pin connector on it. Call and find out. Well, I looked again and it says 3-pin so it would work, just one pin would dangle off the edge - just make sure the polarity is correct when you attach it.

I wouldn't bother replacing the fan either. I had the same problem with my old asus bord (even worse) I got myself a 40mm titan fan but it wouldn't fit, so I went to another store and I got a new original NB cooler, like the one that came with my mobo. But it didn't last that long.
So I finally replaced it with a NB47J.

The reason I waited so long to do so, was that I thougt I had to take my mobo out of my case, but it turned out I didn't have to.

I installed the NB47J on my NF7-S which also came with a crap loud fan. My Chipset temps actually dropped about 5-6C.

I'm amazed at the poor quality chipset cooling on modern motherboards. My three year old Asus A7V333 has a nice big heatisink on it, and they never get noisy!
