I have an Inspiron 6000 with the Intel 2200BG wireless card and I'm trying to get it running on my Suse 9.2 os. I've downloaded the driver from intel and followed the instructions for unpacking it and starting the install. It has its own make file and you're supposed to just be able to type make and have it compile the driver for you. However, when I type make I get this:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24-obj/i386/default'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'modules'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.8-24-obj/i386/default'
make: *** [modules] Error 2

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd suggest you recompile your own kernel, it's not hard at all, if you are not sure, put it as a module.

Personally i think Suse is a great distro but if you want it to work out of the box, you're better off with slac,, and do't listen to the morons, slack is easy to install and easy to maintain.

Do you have the kernel sources installed? For making modules, you usually need them.

I'm pretty new at Linux and have never recompiled the kernel. Don't even know how. I know how to program in Linux, and that's about it. Never actually messed with the inner-workings of Linux. Also don't know what slac is. Never heard of it. Can you tell me where to get that also?

Changing distro's is not usually the solution to a problem. It looks to me that suse has a rpm with the driver you need for that card. You shouldn't need to compile anything. Did you search yast for the rpm?

I didn't search Yast, but I did search Intel and it's listed site for support. They referenced an rpm file, but never provided a link.

However, this is a new installation and I went back through and made sure all sources where installed, and now it works. Now I just have to see if I can get the stupid card to work.

Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be back with more problems.

SUSE was my first distro; I had troubles with it. It's nice to look at, but getting video acceleration is terrible. I have the exact laptop running Gentoo (very easy to get the wireless up), but if you install Ubuntu Hoary, everything, including wireless and sound, will work out of the box.

I imagine the SUSE kernel has the appropriate options already built in, but who knows.

SuSe provides the nVidia drivers via YAST, I can't imagine that they wouldn't provide the ipw2200 drivers there too.

ndiswrapper should be a very last resort, it's crap and leads companies to believe that they can get away without supporting Linux. And on top of that, Intel has released drivers so there's no point in trying to make the Windows drivers work in Linux.

Well, here's the update. I finally got Suse 9.3 running. For whatever reason, it just wouldn't start up X server. Installed 9.2, updated it and installed drivers, and then upgraded to 9.3. That finally worked. I now have my wireless card working and it recognizes my Intel 915 graphics card. The only remaining problem is this. I can't get any resolution other than Vesa 800x600. I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 15.4" laptop. There is a built in monitor called Dell 1280x Laptop Display, as well as 1024x, 1400x, and 1600x. Well, I got the WSXGA Ultrasharp that can do 1600x1200. 1280x800 would be fine by me, but right now I'll take anything better than 800x600. It doesn't matter which dell monitor I select or what resolution, as soon as I test it, the screen dies. I have to hit CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE to get the screen back. Everytime! No setting works. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? I've searched the web and found a ton of people with the Intel graphics card problem, but no one with the resolution problem. Any ideas would be useful. I'm willing to try just about anything.

Nevermind, just got it. It was the firmware that Dell has. Had to revert back to a previous version to get the X server to work. Never again will I purchase a Dell computer.
