The last game that I played on-line on a consistant basis was Quakeworld. I've tried Quake3 and UT, but they get rather boring. I haven't had a chance to get into Everquest yet. Which games do you recommend if I want multiplayer, but I'm not looking for another FPS. I'm looking for something where I can build a character and even join some type of clan. I've heard of Diablo and Everquest, but do they allow you to build stats and a character? Do any require actually fighting or are they completely turn based? Personally I loved playing Final Fantasy of the PS because you had a little input into each battle. Games like Civ III are a little lame IMO since the outcome is based purely on stats of each piece.

Another plug for DAoC. Haven't played too many other games since this came out. Very well done and supported with frequest upgrades. It does have a montly fee to play just so you know. This would be for the support they offer and continuous updates to the game over time. It is truely a fun game IMHO. Good Luck!

I certainly liked DAoC a great deal when I first got it. I was amazed by (a) how good it looked, and (b) how many of the obvious bugs and problems of other games (e.g. EverQuest, Asheron's Call) had been dealt with.

But that said, the game is unfinished. I mean really unfinished. There are about 12 monster models in the whole damn game; they just change their names and sizes to give the appearance of variety. The dungeons are much the same; some of the dungeons are duplicated across different realms with different names, and in one of the realms (Albion) one of the dungeons has a big chunk of another dungeon cut-n-pasted right into it!

I realise these aren't game-killing flaws, but if I'm going to pay for the subscription, I'll wait until they've had a chance to put in a little more art.

Other problems include balance between realms and classes (again, balance problems are nothing new, but things seem to be changing very quickly right now, and I think it might well settle down in a few months) and the fact that the biggest selling-point of the game, Realm vs Realm warfare, is poorly and incompletely implemented.

Again, all of these things might be fixed nicely in (say) three or four months' time. But right now, my advice would be to stay away and let them figure the game out. I find it very frustrating, and quite boring, to play as it currently stands.

Now, all of that to one side, it is the best of the current crop of online RPGs, and I think it's the current best for someone who hasn't played these games to start with. But personally, I would recommend holding off for a little bit before you decide to pick it up. I bet it'll get really good in the new year.

Well I purchased DAoC since I've never played any of these games and it seemed to have the most future potential. I guess I was looking for something like Final Fantasy, but online.

While I've personally never played it, you might want to check out Ragnarok Online (mmorpg). I don't know how it plays, but the graphics have a very console/anime feel to them, so it might be something similar to Final Fantasy. I also believe its free. You can probably do a search on google for it.

DAoC is ok, but EQ is still the king of the MMORPG's. I would highly recommend it.
1) You build your character
2) You get to fight all the time
3) You can choose a pvp server if you like ( stay off Sullon Zek for your first experience though;) )
4) It has 144 zones now. Most unique and varied. SUPER large world
5) Towns have character and distinct feelings
6) Most class balance/game bug issues have been ironed out over its 2 year lifespan
7) Lots of different race and class combo's to choose from
8) It's cheaper than DAoC
9) It's more fun than DAoC

That's my view. I've played both extensively.
Be careful though. EQ is so addictive, it can ruin you! hehe.

I don't know how addicted I would become. A friend of mine tried to get me hooked and it never sparked any interest. He came over and played on my PC for about an hour and I watched, but soon after I left and he played on my PC for awhile. The game was dark, looked the same, and the graphics where awful. Maybe I'm just a MMORPG player, but if EQ is the pennicle, then I'm going elsewhere.

BTW, $12.00 a month is nothing so DAoC being more expensive is a poor arguement. C'mon, most of us make that in 10-15 minutes at work.

Dude, don't ask for opinions and then cut a guy down for giving his. Ok? You should have said you werent considering EQ. You could have saved me the trouble of trying to help you. Sheesh. :disgust:
BTW the graphics engine is *brand-new* in EQ now.

If you read the entire you post you would notice that I've already seen EQ and that I wasn't impressed. Why try and point out something that I have zero interest in? If you are just an EQ fanboy then state it.

Nope, actually in your post you asked questions about EQ...

Can I withdraw my helpful advice? You aren't worth it.

Kentstate: Don't be such a goddamn pr!ck. I gave my opinion to you. I wasn't trying to start an argument.

Don't expect to hear any more "opinions" from me. You aren't worth the effort.

A$$.

Thanks Saltin and Heraclitus for not putting forth any more effort because you both are fanboys and seem to be a great waste of time.

It's just a shame that I state that I've heard of EQ and that by asking for a game, you should know better than recommend something that I've already considered. Maybe next time I will say that since I'm mention game "X" that means that I'm not interested in it and that by mentioning it, that I'm looking for a game elsewhere. Plus later I state that I already purchased DAoC and somehow you keep trying to push EQ.

To the posters that mentioned the $50 - $70 an hour wage, I was referring to people that are not in college or younger. I was making the point that $2 a month difference isn't a big deal to those of us with a career.

You know, the funny thing about message boards, is that it's very easy to reference exactly "what" people have said.
Let me just quote you on a thing or two here. You apparently need to be straightend out on what you said

.

<< I haven't had a chance to get into Everquest yet. Which games do you recommend if I want multiplayer, but I'm not looking for another FPS. >>

No mention of knowing anything about EQ here........

<< I've heard of Diablo and Everquest, but do they allow you to build stats and a character? Do any require actually fighting or are they completely turn based? >>

Here you ask questions about EQ and Diablo.

<< It's just a shame that I state that I've heard of EQ and that by asking for a game, you should know better than recommend something that I've already considered. >>

So, based on the fact that you "havent had a chance to get into EQ yet, and that you then proceed to ask "does it allow you to build stats and a character"? I should assume you have already considered the game?

You my friend, are a moron.

So ... whats DaOC about? Never heard of it. EQ wasn't fun for me when I tried it. Oh well. Pretty nice read...got a lot of info out of it.
