So I successfully unlocked my iPhone 4 (AT&T) and was going to wait until Nexus 4 comes back in stock so that I can list it on eBay. (special thanks to AT forum member Jpeyton, who gave me the courage and knowlege to get out of the carrier-leash that I have been ignorantly subjected to for the longest time)
Then my dad's iPhone 4 got stolen during the end-of-year parties somewhere. So he needs a phone. I want to get a new phone and a new service. This is a perfect excuse to gift a new phone to myself.. Except that you can't get a Nexus 4 at this point. It's tough to shell out double the money for a similar phone. (Optimus G from Verizon is $700!) Also, after giving some more thought, I realized that my needs when it comes to mobile phones are modest. And I have tablets for whatever "smart" stuff that a smart phone does. So my phone need not have the fastest CPU, highest PPI, nor the best app selection.
The bottom line is that I am looking for a cheap Android phone to tide me over until Nexus 4 is avialable or the next big Android phone ("phone X"?) debuts. Here are the criteria that I am looking for:
0. Unlocked
1. Hotspot/Tethering: Absolutely a must
2. Good battery life while tethering
3. Good tethering performance
That's right.
I suppose a phone will let me make phone calls and send text messages. I don't care if sound quality is not the best as long as it gets the job done. Same goes for the texting. As long as it delivers, I won't quarrel with the speed or keyboard. I will most likely use tablets for texting, anyway. No need for anything fancy. Only thing that I'd add to the above list is a decent camera, but it doesn't have to be the top of the line.
I prefer to have all 3 methods of tethering - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB - but I will take any combination of 2 for the moment (one for main, a second as a backup). I would like to spend the least while I wait, so used ones should be fine, or even desirable, too.
Is there such a phone? Or Nexus 4 is the only choice that makes sense, money-wise? I am somewhat wary of Nexus 4's battery life while performing hotspot duty. And I don't know how long it'll take to get one. My dad needs a phone quick.
