The love affair is because it's always good, In-N-Out is the only place where I know 100% it'll be delicious. I've had bad burgers everywhere else, even the fancy places the charge $11 bucks for one. In-N-Outs consistency is remarkable. I've eaten there well over 100 times and every visit was as good as the last.

well for me, it has always been consistent. consistently mediocre....or at least average. local char-grill places are, in my experience, consistently good. but like you said, you probably can't depend on a different franchise/different restaurant of the same type of food, but in some other town, being as good as the one you know locally.

meh.

fwiw, it's hard not to argue that In N Out is waaaay overhyped for what it is. I mean, years before I tried it, before I even knew about the internet, I was hearing from friends and associates about this mystical shangri la of hamburger joints available only on the west coast. that the fries were AWESOME. also, The Big Lebowski really lets on about how spectacular this place must be.

first experience--HUGE letdown. 2nd and 3rd, and on....nothing to improve the situation. I was expecting a major overhaul of the fast food burger paradigm. Honestly, how should anyone expect any different based on the amount of praise thrown at this place? Most native west coasters tend to admit that it isn't revolutionary by any means, it's just better than McDonald's (...but then so is the skid mark in my undies). No one can give any technical reason as to why their food is better--there isn't such an answer. It's just one of those things that people feel to be better.

There would be much less disappointment from the virgin non west-coasters if they knew going in to expect a good fast food burger, but nothing mind-shattering or revolutionary.

I don't get why people here always do this. They try to compare a small little chain with less than a handful of places to something like In-n-Out with thousands of places in different states. Can't even compare the two. Also I feel more concerned about you living in the IE. No one WANTS to live there.

tbh, i'm surprised they have more than one location.

anyways, if you scroll down through their locations list, you'll see them elsewhere. one's on lincoln... forget what street crosses near it. but it's like a mile from lincoln and santa monica blvd...

and dont tell me noone wants to live in santa monica. >.>

I don't see how it's overhyped, because to me it's one of the best burger places out there. I go often and have had to wait up to 40 minutes to get my food before. I suspect if I didn't find it as good as the hype there's no way I'd go ever due to the wait. Even at midnight the 2 by me have an average wait of 15 minutes. And mind you they're very quick at making your food. Last time I went both of the lines were all the way out onto the main street and down a good quarter of a block. I doubt more than a few were out of state noobs visiting So Cal and dying to find out for the 1st time. Most were probably a person like me, who knows how good it is and will wait however long it takes to get a meal there. I counted about 40 cars between the 2 lane and the walk up window had a line all the way to the main sidewalk. When I got my grub I wasn't upset in the least it took just about 30 minutes to get it. I guess different strokes for different folks.
