, definitely one of the alltime favs. You know the story is, Dicky Betts wrote that song after a tombstone he used to nail his girlfriend on. A story like that's just gotta be true :p *shrug*

I can't begin to count how many times I've listened to that album.

I'm not sure if it's the GREATEST ever, as there are many other great live albums from back in that period when live albums were "the" thing ... but Live at the Fillmore East is definitely right up there !

Some others ...

Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya Ya's Out
Bob Seger & T.S.B.B. - Live Bullet
Cream - Wheels of Fire (1 of the 2 LP's), Live Cream Vol. I & II
Derek & The Dominos - Live in Concert
Yes - Yessongs
AC/DC - If You Want Blood, You've Got It
Skynyrd - One More From the Road
Todd Rundgren - Back to the Bars
Neil & Crazy Horse - Live Rust

Duane Allman is a god on the guitar.

Yes, he was.

And speaking of Duane, isn't it kinda wild how Derek Trucks looks similar, also plays slide, and often plays with the Allman Bros. Band ? Deja Vu ...

The way I heard it, it was a tomb stone near where they all used to go party. A great story either way, a beautiful piece of music, and a live performance that's second to none.

Edit: Red, I've always felt the studio version was a nowhere near as good as the live one. That's probably because I had been listening to the Filmore East recording for years before I heard the studio version, but it doesn't seem to have the same sound.

bumping this so more people here it, that album is absolutely amazing.

Derek Trucks is also a fantastic player.. has the chops to hang with Duane and explores more sonic territory.

The newish allman bros dvd w/ Trucks and Haynes is unreal, Trucks' solo in Desdemona is worth the ticket price alone. Midnight Rider is also pretty  on it.

There are some amazing legit Trucks bootlegs out there.. the bands cover of 'To Know You (Is To Love You)' has absolutely breathtaking tone on it

Jam songs always sound better live. BTW I heard a version of Layla without the slide guitar of Duane Allman, in fact no slide guitar at all and it paled in comparison to the original. Duane was a musical God among men.

The Fillmore concerts have been a longtime favorite, both "Fillmore East" and "Eat A Peach" ... I put them together on the same tape (then cd), so after the end of Whipping Post, it would roll right into Mountain Jam. So I was happy to see that they finally came out with a "Filmore Concerts" set that had all of it .

They did do some re-edit, but it's all pretty much the same. I love these guys ...

 for Allman Brothers.

I spent all of my high school years growing up where they got famous, in Macon.

The place where Duane died on his motorcycle is in the hood now, or maybe it always was.

Betts himself said that that was just a joke that was told and stuck. Truth, according to Betts, is that he wrote the song for a "certain someone" and didn't know what to call it. So there was a cemetary near where they lived at the time and had a tombstone that read "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". So he just decided to call it that.

Still a great tune by a great band.

Saw them at Watkin's Glen. Damn good live show.

I too saw them at Watkin's Glen. The Alman Brothers and the Dead were both great jamming bands. Alas, I slept though The Band's performance.

Awesome album. Duane could play the slide like no other. I saw the Allman Brothers with Derek Trucks about a year or so ago. He's incredible.

I saw him at Crossroads 07, he jammed with a lot of awesome guitar players and he def was one of the more memorable ones there. His set with Robert Cray and Johnny Winter was mind blowing.
