In Manhattan: where to donate computer hardware ?

Omer

I now have an extra computer, 2 extra monitors, and a bunch of random ram, vid cards, etc.

I rather donate it than sell it.

Anybody have any recommendations ? Preferably to a place that will come to my apartment and pick up the stuff ( especially the huge 21" monitor )

thanks!

a new organization just opened up in Saint Louis . . they take all the junk computers and parts they find, buildin some working systems, and give them away. . . but to qualify for a free system you have to put in 20 or so hours of volunteer work at the organization . .

I may volunteer there (not to get a comp, but to help out) this summer . . .

I mean, look em up, maybe you can ship it to em . . (yeah, right.)

Anywho, I'm assuming there will be something similiar wherever you are.

I just read about some homeless dude in NYC that collects, repairs and sells computer parts right on the street corner.

That was in the New York Times a few weeks ago. Maybe you can track him down 😛

wow -- so many responses.

I've done a bunch of google searches, but was hoping to find some recommendations.

It's a P3-1ghz Dell, with 1 gig of RAM, a DVD-ROM & CDRW, and a Gainward GF3 TI 200

Two CRT monitors, 21" P815 Viewsonic, and a Sony 19" G something ( forget the exact model )

Also, how do you determine 'bluebook' value for old PC hardware ? Would like to get the tax deduction on this ...

thanks.

LOL... you just described exactly the specs on my main machine (except it's not a Dell). Am I really that behind the times? 😉 You have PM.

I think I've seen that guy around before. I saw this dude around 37th & Bway with one of those big laundry carts full of computer equipment. He was prying open a panel on a streetlamp and plugging stuff into it to test it.

sell it and donate the cash to someone.
then they can do what they want with it.
any charity would rather have cash then a PC.

This is a very good idea, especially considering how overvalued PIIIs still are. Anyone they give the machine to probably wouldn't use it for more than web/email anyway which would be a huge waste.
