Same question as this thread over at Apple Discussions:

"In Mail [in Mavericks], how can I hide the Junk mbox?"

Mail->Preferences->Junk Mail and uncheck "Enable Junk Mail Filtering" does NOT work.

Nope, IMAP.

If I recall correctly, you can choose any IMAP folder to function as the Junk folder regardless of its name. There is some intuition in Mail. It sometimes recognizes the correct folder automatically. Often, though, it creates a redundant special folders on the server and you have to delete them manually after selecting the actual special folders that existed on the server already. You won't see the real folder name when it's marked as your junk mail folder and it disappears from the folder tree like the other special folders (sent, trash, drafts, etc).

None of this is taking place on the server. There is no corresponding folder on the server. This is entirely on the Mac. I also have "Enable Junk Mail Filtering" turned off (and always have).

This is a new problem that popped up with Mavericks.

I don't think this is an actual folder, this is just the Mail app categorizing a message as spam while it is still in the Inbox on the server. It just helps tidy up your inbox. By the way, is this an iCloud account? Because in iCloud I do have a Junk folder and I believe junk mail is placed in that folder on the server as well. But if it's another account, it may just be a visual aid.

Ah ha! I do not really use my iCloud account, so I totally forgot about it (sorry, Ichinisan). There is a Junk mailbox on there.

Ok, so can I delete that?

Still unsure why you would want to delete it. Practically all email providers have a junk/spam folder to make your life easier no?

I don't use that feature (and never have). Also, I don't like having extraneous, useless mailboxes in the dock - I have too many necessary mailboxes as it is.

Hmm...I'm betting it's considered a "special folder" that can't be deleted. Even if you turn off spam filtering in Mail, I believe the server will put suspected spam there anyway...so I would want access to the folder so I could peek in there once in a while.

I don't ever use my iCloud account, so I don't care where spam goes (I guess it would all be spam ;) ).

I would like to be able to keep it active in case someone for some reason finds that address and sends me something important, but having the junk mailbox there does annoy me.

Yeah, 1st World Problems.

If you don't use your iCloud account, why don't you just set up a forwarding to your main account and disable Mail in iCloud preferences? That way you can set up only your main account in the mail app, and if your IMAP server doesn't request a Junk folder, it shouldn't create one.
