Buddy is in florence, italy but has an apartment without a phone line. what are his options for internet?

He is in the city but cellphone internet appears to cost $1.50 a minute. help?

he will pay up to $1000 a month to have 24 hour internet access.

Cellphone is too much at it's 1.50 a minute.

He will buy a mobile satellite dish if he has to. He just can't alter his apartment in any way. I guess italy sucks like that. He says:

"thing is man.. i don't know the technical side of all this
i want to be
in my apartment
online.
that's it baby"

any ideas?

ehhh... he says he will drive to a WiFi spot as long as he can access it 24 hours.

Florence italy. He is desperate.

Why is he so desperate? and why is he in italy? (always lived there, just moved there, or what, ....just curious)

I did search a bit... Man, I visited more link farms than I can count. Either I suck now in Italian or the Italian ISPs fail to advertise their products :|

If his appartment has a television connection, your friend could maybe use a cable provider. I wasn't able to find one though.

There is internet by satellite for normal users in Italy. The provider tiscali.it however transfered all satelite services to a company called digiweb last June and they don't even have a website! There may be other ISPs but I didn't find them.

The good news is that I've found a Wireless Internet provider. Telecom Italia offers this also to persons who aren't customers already, they have a prepaid offer. There are 12 WiFi hotspots in Florence city.

The prepaid cards come in the following flavors:
1h=3?
5h=5?
15h=15?
7 days=40?
(Once logged in, the countdown won't stop no matter how much traffic the customer generates, I guess)

List of WiFi spots in the Toscana
Shop/Product information page
Punto 187 Shop
I think they sell the prepaid cards here. Chose "Toscana" and "FI" on the popdown menus to get a list of shops near Florence.

Hope that helps...

He's there on a month long working vacation. The apartment he has is nice but is so old it doesn't even have a phone line in it. He's not allowed to make any modifications. He needs to get online to work.

Internet via cable or satelite.

Cable is a no go. Old apartment.

Satelite is possible. He can't instal anything. Maybe one of those foldup suitcase military style satelites will do. Anyone know where to buy one?

Put a satellite dish next to the window inside of the apartment and leave the window open. If he wants to buy some serious equipment then I would recomend getting the same stuff they use on the south pole. (Cannot remember who makes it)

Get real! I have travelled in Italy and know what you are describing. The only solution that is reasonable is to find a local Internet Cafe - they area all over the place. That is enough to take care of email and stuff like that. For fun and games - forget it unless you are molto rico. 🙂

Two problems there:
  1. I don't think you can get Pringles in Italy (USA Product)
  2. This may be against the law in Italia. He may not come home after he does this.

Pringles italy. (Is there an italian Radio Shack?) Actually I was semi-joking, but with a decent antenna and an unobstructed veiw at a hotspot would probably allow a conection. Your friend could talk to the hotspot owners and work out a deal.

Internet Cafe's are not open 24 hours a day. He is despereate. He will pay $1,000+ a month to have internet connection 24/7.

Uhm... did I post in invisible mode? 😉

I'm sure the spots are online 24/7, it costs about $220/month, no contract...

Problem solved? 😕

I guess it's neither kind nor legal to secretly access private WLANs, but if he's near enough of one of the 12 hotspots in Florence, he could access them without leaving the appartment...

No. Also, many of the "hotspots" are only open 10 hours a day. It's a sucky situation.

Last time I was in Italy, I was able to connect through any local phone to local AOL and get my email, etc.

How about buying and subscribing to an Italian cell phone that can be Internet connected?

Another Problem is that Pringles now come in a plasitc "can" (or bottle). I do not know if that is the case with the Italian version.

Good Job, I did not know Pringles were an International snack. I thought It was just an American Thing.

All that for 1 month? Sheesh! I guess money is no object. I would look for a cool signorina who has a setup ready to go. 🙂

I wonder if that area has wireless access? For $200 a month you can afford satelite internet access.

Is this a rediculous price for an apartment?

2375 Euro per Month

Florence is a tourist trap. They probably want the area preserved as an historical manner in many places. You pay for what you get. Living in a smaller city may be more ideal. The train system is pretty good in Italy. I had a job in the American Embassy in Rome and lived in Ciampino and use to just commute.

Let me get this straight he there for ONLY ONLY ONLY ONE MONTH AND HE WANT TO PAY 1000. Just to use internet Is he rich or something .I mean he is on a vacation you should just relax and not even bother with cell phone, tv,internet.He should hold it in it just one month not worth 1000 drive or take the bus to the cafe. 1000=OUCH
