I just finished a couple hours of Ut2k4 gameplay with not a single hiccup on this 8800 GTX using the leaked then pulled 162.15 drivers.
Are you on XP? I still get stuttering in the CTF Citadel flag rooms, really bad when firing guns at opponents. The problem persists even with 162.18.

No, Vista x64 Ultimate.

The thing is, i know of the issue you are describing; i've seen your posts in the thread in nvidia's forums.

The thing is, my issues with UT2k4 (i've posted in that thread) are really not the same.
What happens for me isn't stuttering.
It's basically a random miniature lockup that lasts for about a second or two on basically any map any server.
But then usually after basically pausing for a second, it'll "unchug" back into gameplay just fine, except that i've been fragged already 98% of the time :frown:

Or once or twice, it crashed with the driver stopped error, though that may have been unrelated.

The same issue i described has never ever happened with my X1900 XT, HD 2900 XT, & thus far, never with my 8800 GTX on the 162.15 drivers for Vista 64.
I am keeping fingers crossed.

Reasoning is extremely simple.

32-bit is a dead future, & any gamer/enthusiast looking ahead even a couple years knows it.

4 GB RAM on Vista will be the norm very quickly, as Vista does a very decent with micro-management of RAM IMO, meaning there's really no such thing as too much RAM for Vista.
Also, considering how cheap high resolution displays are getting, with future games, i know very well 2-3 GB of RAM simply isn't going to suffice.

Heck, IMO, it doesn't already.

You could be right, I'm not doubting you, but for now, this gamer/enthusiast feels Vista32 is sufficient and better supported (right now). When the time comes and everything supports Vista64, I will certainly upgrade to it and buy another 2GB of memory. By that time, I probably won't have the same rig I have now anyway.

thank-you!

it was a big surprise to me .. how could i refuse?

:)

good luck with the nvidia drivers, n7 ... i think it can only get better [as with AMD's drivers]
--and running that 2nd display is no big deal with xfire or SLi is it?
... at the worst a third inexpensive card?

Yeah, except not all mobos like running secondary cards.

Mine being a prime example. I used to run 4 displays on my A8N32-SLI Deluxe...but adding a secondary card in this mobo proved to be impossible, so adding a third card doesn't sound likely when running CF.

As for luck with the nV drivers, it seems i may have hit another snag.

Dirt.

Appears that the game running at 1 fps isn't exactly normal :frown:

I swear i can't win with this 8800.

thanks mate, I feel pretty lucky...my car is even luckier...it survived too and will be back on the road in a few weeks....it only sustained $3500 worth of damage to the body, all the running gear and major stuff survived....I'm not sure how it (or myself) managed to survive..it hit the tree dead on, although police reckon that because the car drove upwards in to the tree, much of the impact was taken by the front crossmembers that support the radiator, air con and front end components....

But I'm happy, I got to (almost) walk away and my rare XR6 will live to see another day.

i know this is OT ... and you don't have air bags ... but ... were you wearing your seat-belts?

i am PLAYING games again!
:D

now after Crapcom's Resident Evil, i had some pretty mixed feelings about buying Lost Planet ... well, it is actually good with the KB+Mouse ... i have no problem not having to use the controller.

BUT ... it is a HUGE resource hog in DX10 that looks AWESOME with motion blur ... but has to be played at 14x9 with LOW settings
--i am going to play it on my CRT at 10x7 :p
---it NEEDS a GTX ultra or i need to get a 2nd 2900xt

Verrrrrry frustrating
--now i am kinda glad i got a xfire MB ... but i understand WHY of the rest of you want to sit out this gen of DX10 games

DX10 games have a more "cinematic" look to them. That being said, you don't really need to run at an LCD's native resolution, since there is a lot of motion blur and improved lighting, which makes the detail of textures less important. You shouldn't be playing games to stare at the textures of a wall, anyways.

have you played Lost Planet?

very impressive with motion blur; but i would HATE to run my LCD at other than native resolution ... i don't like "everything blur"

My CRT is back from the dead ... only the switch is bad; i can turn it off with a powerstrip intill it finally dies ... i don't mind my 10x7 CRT because it is sharp and still 19" and looks better than my LCD ... yet it is STILL barely playable with the DX 10 pathway. i am HOPING it is drivers because CoJ runs much more smoothly - even at 14x9 with medium details.

i really *need* a 2nd 2900xt for 14x9 for these two new games i have :p
-i wonder what Crysis will do to it

Yeah, I played the demo. But then again I'm using a 2407fpw and probably viewing it at a further distance than you are. The game didn't really look any better at 1920x1200 than it did at a lower resolution. It sure ran a lot slower though.

Have you tried turning HDR down to medium? This helps performance A LOT.

HDR and shadows :p
-noAA/16AF

i really like it better at 10x7 with more details ... my 2900xt can manage it fine ... CoJ runs great so i am hoping it is immature drivers for LP;
Best of all, LP doesn't need a controller to play ... unlike RE4 ... and there are tons of individual settings to tweak

Of course I was wearing a seat belt...things would have been a lot worse if I wasn't....would have been nice if my car was fitted with a ejection seat...I sure could have used one of those :p

an ejection seat AND a parachute

ANYWAY, quick update on HD2900xt and Lost Planet

first of ALL, i am really liking this game ... FPS for sure and lots of shooting with usually an alternate way to do things
... although i liked it at first, i am finding that LP's motion blur makes me SICK ... and ultimately doesn't look that good as it tends to be overdone [you DO want "high" but it is a resource hog] ... so i leave MB OFF

i am playing at 11x8 with my 19" CRT and i can play with ALL other settings at med/high and HDR ... no AA/8xAF ... it doesn't drop below 30 FPS in the Heaviest Firefights although it has artifacted a couple of times ... my CPU temps are the highest with this game also ... up to 65C :p

if drivers can improve it, i'm back to 14x9

It is a third person shooter.

I can wait to post my results with the 2900XT at 1920x1200. Should be both humorous and shameful. ;)

Although my results wont be comparable as I am still on an Opteron.

Yes, but there is a zoom feature that lets you play as a FPS. I forgot which key does it but I accidentally did it while benching the game.
Initially though, it is a TPS.

it is .. but i have the "use FPS" view enabled .. very useful ... and i kept it on for quite awhile now

actually, i am going to set it aside ... i am only a couple of missions into the game ... and wait for the inevitable patch .. and the lucky cats 7.7

i would really like to play in 14x9 ... although to be sure i LOVE my CRT ... playing satisfactorily at 11x8 has KEPT me FROM buying a 2nd Hd2900xt and a booster PS

CoJ is next ... but i get Overlord tomorrow ... and that is exactly what the Dr. ordered.

Here's the latest on Valve's black box - directly from Steam:

Friday, July 13 2007

We're now in the home stretch on getting everything finished off with the Orange Box games. Just this week, we've finished recording and placing all of the developer commentary for the three new games. Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal together will include over two and a half hours of new commentary that should help shed some light into the thinking and challenges behind these three new games. This is all in addition to the hour or so of commentary included in Episode One. Commentary will be included on all three platforms (PC, XBOX 360, and PS3).

My *consolation prize* for keeping the $320 HD2900xt
:D

remember that Lost Coast Demo that i started D/L'ing well over a week ago? ...
well i kept up with it every night .. 78% ... getting there [i need to DL it all and then back it up for "offline" mode]

gotta love 56K dialup ... not!

Can you play through the entire game with a FPS view? If you can I might actually buy it.

i am not sure. i just got so carried away in FP that i forgot to switch for at least an hour. :p
i think it turns into a "mech game" after awhile ... there are advantages to 3rd person

i am setting it aside till Cat 7.7 ... it is an "important" title and i am sure it is at the top of AMD "to do" list .. FPS are hanging in the 30s+ with MB off and all other setting Med/Hi 0xAA/8xAF at 11x8 ... i'd like 14x9, of course ... or even 12x9 with 'mostly high'

in the meantime i am just starting to playi Overlord
--and also CoJ [still on my CRT]
