*WELP*

I have an in-grown toe nail on my left foot, left side of my big toe. It really sucks because it has been there for honestly about a month. I have tried soaking it with epson salt, and then jabbing in there with a knife type deal to try and get it out. Sometimes I get it, and a few days later it starts hurting again and starts to puss....

BAHHHHHHHH!

I hate this. What do you guys do when you get one? What have you heard that works? I want to avoid going to the doctor for this stupid type of thing, but I may have to have him detinate it and cut it out with a SCAPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my buddies had that done. He had to get a few shots on his foot and in his toe (a lot of nerve endings, so it has to hurt).... but anyway, his toe is dicked up now and is extremely ugly on the corners......................... What about yourself, what was your experience with it?

I had one done. It hurt for two weeks before I went in. The shot to numb is didn't hurt because of the severe pain I had already suffered. He cut it out and the pain magically went away. It didn't even hurt anymore after the novocaine had worn off. Well worth the disfigurement.

My toe is not "dicked up". :D The nail just doesn't grow on the sides anymore. It was quite painful at the time.

Do *not* go to just any doctor, make sure you go to a podiatrist. They specialize in that sort of thing and can take care of it much better than your family doctor could. I've had it done to both sides of both of my big toes. It sucked at the time, but it's a whole lot better now!

It's quite a simple operation.. stick a needle in your toe to numb it up, cuts the nail down really deep on both sides, cleans it up, then dresses it up and you're done.

"dresses it up"

??

I had to get "poked" with a needle on one of my fingers, and it hurt like a mofo. I heard toes are the same way.

Dresses it up = puts bandages on it.. wraps it up..

The needle is really the only thing you feel, then when you get home make sure to take some painkillers to make sure you don't feel anything after the numbness wares off!

I used to get them regularly and was supposed to have the surgery where they cut it out and use acid.
After a little invetigation and research, I started growing my townail longer before trimming and make sure my shoes are not to tight at the toe.
No more problems.

I dont wear tight shoes, that is what is to wierd. I do play a lot of sports though so someone could have stepped on my foot or something. Anyone know what causes in-grown's?

I've had surgery on both my toes to permanently remove ingrown toenails. You'll probably have to do that too.

In answer to your other question, I'm pretty sure they are genetic. All it takes is for it to cut in at one point and it hurts like a bastard.

I just had one removed 3 weeks ago. I had it for about 10 years and would trim the side of the nail myself... I just got sick and tired of doing it. I originally went to a doctor and that was a huge mistake... that b@asturd hurt my foot so bad I could hardly walk for two days. I was gun shy after that and thus trimmed it myself (which sometimes hurt also).

Anyway... flash forward to three weeks ago. I had it removed by a podiatrist... It was awesome, I feel like a million bucks. He even killed the nail bed for me (acid thing). So far so good.

Please go to a podiatrist... it's the best thing you can do right now.

Occasionally either one of my big toes will hurt on the sides really bad...I just put neosporin down the side of it and it usually goes away in a couple days :Q

yeah go to a podiatrist. i had ingrowns all the time... had to get it cut on the side, and the whole nail removed another time. i can still remember my toe throbbing for two days. but its better then having the nail stab my toe endlessly.

Oh, wow, I know how you feel. I used to get in-grown toenail all the time, on both feet, once every month. Nobody could figure out any ways to prevent it, and I kept having to go back to my doctor to have him cut off a slice of the nail down to the base. Eventually I got tired of going to him so I performed my own surgery with the scissors of a swiss army knife and kept using that method for a couple years, painful and bloody but it got the job done. When I got tired of doing that, I went to a specialist who removed a half-centimeter wide slice of my toe nail on both feet and jabbed a que-tip like thing in the hole that was made. It was a special chemical that killed the nail root matrix to prevent it from growing back. He did that on both feet a little over a year ago and that side of those nails haven't grown back (and they never will!). No more worries.

Looking back, all those surgeries (I must have had about 20 or so) were quite fun to watch. You can't feel anything after those shots (which hurt like hell) so watching them cut your toenail down to the root with scissors and seeing all the blood that poors out (if he doesn't use a tourniquet) is a great sight.

The specialist that I eventually went to also removed all of the scar tissue that had formed from all my surgeries, I imagine that accounted for most of the pain I felt afterwards. Before the shots he sprayed my toes with this liquid ice stuff to numb it. Extremely cold. Extremely fun.

hehehe you sound like a sick sick man. :) Thanks for the info though. I'm not looking forward to the shot that they have to give to cut away at the roots and what not. I will visit a Podiatrist this next week. How long does the whole process take, and it is one of those things where you slip your socks and shoes back on and your good to go? Or does it hurt for a few days afterwards? Thanks.

I've had these before and seriously, you need go to the doctor. If it oozing pus it's infected. Have a doctor cut it out and get some antibiotics. You don't want to lose your toe do you?

I have had them my whole life.

When I was a kid I had the inside of both my big toes operated on, they have NEVER become ingrown again.

When I was in Marine boot camp I got another one (outside of big toe), the Medic sprayed aerosol bacteen on it (Freezing it) then took a scalpel and hemostats and RIPPED IT OUT!! (HURT LIKE HELL)
That worked for a short time, but it eventually came back. Now I just use an Exacto knife and do it myself. If you're careful, you can do it yourself, and NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU SCREW UP, it STILL won't hurt as bad as when the Corpsman did it to ME!!!!
