I've been able to listen to the full "Come Clarity" album (not going to mention how, but some will know) and in short, it's not as good as the great Whoracle or Jester Race, but it's a lot better than Reroute to Remain and STYE...combined.
One thing that was mentioned by Anders was "it will be more upbeat and have more guitar harmonies" (that isn't quoted directly). Basically, that's the truth. The guitar work is greatly improved, reminding me much of the good parts of RtR ("Reroute to Remain", or the track on their EP "Watch them Feed"), but it sounds like it should be on STYE. Don't be angry though, you'll also catch familiar sounds from the older tracks too.
The album opens with "Take this Life." The first thing that comes to mind is "OH GOD! It's another STYE!" And it sounds like that for a good bit of the song, but it's different somehow. The guitars are heavier and not nearly as simple (in general, BETTER) as those in STYE. Overall, it could have been on STYE, but it is a good song. One thing you'll notice is a short riff that sounds just like something from Whoracle, which is a good thing.
"Leeches" is where the album kicks off. The riffs are dark sounding. They're interesting, and the whole song is different than most In Flames songs. Eventually the song opens into a beautiful chorus, something common in the new songs. Although it's a different song, it's still good.
"Reflect the Storm" is a softer song. The guitars start opening up into more riffs, although it's a soft song. Nothing in particular to not here.
"Dead End" is very interesting. It starts off heavy, and then opens up to...female vocals? The song puts in a lot of more rock-ish elements, but is mostly a very heavy metal song, with better guitars of course.
"Scream" sounds something straight from RtR. It's not as crappy though. But thats about it.
"Come Clarity"...the vocals can get annoying, but it shows off In Flame's talent at softer songs.
"Vacuum" opens up with a heavy riff and some nice vocals, and pretty much continues that way. Good song. The chorus is very cool, nice clean vocals and some great guitars.
"Pacing Deaths Trail" starts off with another riff (you didn't find many of these in STYE, did you?). It has some very cool guitar parts in it, even though most of the song doesnt sound as "thick" as some. The cool parts remind me of RtR (sound wise), but the style used reminds me of older albums.
"Crawl Through Knives"...Previous, the album was going to be called this, and it should have stuck. This song is amazing. It opens with a riff that could be found in the album Colony, and continues to be heavy, and then goes into a slightly softer part with Ander's "Korn" vocals, though they aren't NEARLY as bad as before. Then suddenly the song switches right into a blazing chorus, and the clean vocals and guitars just set this amazing mood with the song. It continues throughout the song...man, I love this song.
"Versus Terminus" opens with another blazing riff and it keeps up the riffs throughout the song. The chorus isn't amazing, but everything else just seems to fit right into another great song.
"Our Infinite Struggle" reminds me of hardcore metal bands like As I Lay Dying, in a way, but then it goes into a part where the guitars will cut out shortly while Anders is still going. This happens a few times, and the rest of the song is pretty cool, though I can't really explain it. It's not as technical as some songs, but it's still good.
"Our Vanishing Light" opens up with a riff in the higher notes and then goes into a breakdown, and then goes to another riff...I dunno, the song is kinda cool, sounds almost like a story in some parts.
"Your Bedtime Story is Scaring everyone" is just an instrumental song. Nothing special.
I'm pretty vague at explaining each song. Basically, it draws A LOT from STYE and RtR (more RtR technically)...BUT it draws from the GOOD parts of those albums, while incorporating older style sounds and brand new sounds.
The guitars are much improved from their last two albums though, putting in many many many more riffs and just cool sounding parts. The vocals have been fixed too, and any time Anders sings (or does the Korn crap) it usually sounds great, or it fits well.
Also, a lot of the choruses remind me of Soilwork, which works very well in here.
Pros:
Much much better guitars
more riffs and guitar harmonies
forgot to mention, more solos! 😀 they aren't amazing, but fit the songs and sound good
Fixed vocals
Brand new type of sound that is GOOD
Heavier than STYE and RtR
Cons:
Only a few songs stick out, most are kinda similar in a way
Last song
The softer parts could use work
Overall, this is what RtR and STYE should have been. It's no Whoracle or Jester Race, but if you consider how HARD it is to keep using one sound for years, you'd understand that this is good for a band thats been around for so long. They haven't quite gotten themselves out of the grave that RtR and STYE made, but they're getting close!
9/10
Check it out when it comes out Feb 6th (or...yeah....just Buy iT)
(Sorry if the review sucks)
