In Disney's World

Disney is set to announce a new full-fledged cell phone service that will allow parents to better monitor their children's cell phone usage and track their daily movements. The service is targeted at 10 to 15 year olds and will put parents in the drivers seat instead of the other way around when it comes to cell phone usage.

Some of the features implemented into Disney's service include:

* The ability for parents to set monthly spending limits for voice, text messaging and ringtone downloads. This is all controlled via the phone itself or conveniently from a PC.
* Parents have the ability to set designated times of the day when the phone can be used -- no talking during school hours for little Kaitlyn.
* GPS tracking will give parents the ability to see where their children are at any given moment from a PC or compatible phone.

Spoken like a true 16 year old...

Wait until you have kids, and then come back and talk to us.

Parents keep track of their kids' cell phone usage? Setting limits on cell phone usage? Parents keeping track of where their children are?

Good grief, what's next... parents actually caring about their children?

I'd probably go for this, except I'd prefer a phone that is on the same network that I use. At this point in time, I'd need a comparable service on Verizon's network.

QFT...

Hey Illusions89, pay for your own cell phone and service and then you won't have that problem.

Can't you just post to it and bring it out of the archive?

I think that's a great idea. I always recommend PrePaid for teenagers so they are at least responsible for managing their minutes. Put in $10/mo and if they use it up, let them use their own money to get more. But the limits and setting times and such is a great idea. But I'd hope you could put in certain phone numbers that they could call any tiem for emergencies like Home or 911 or something.

I think the emergency numbers are a given on any cell phone, regardless of minutes used. Even prepaid. I am not sure though, but yes, it would be a good idea to have set phone number. I believe other services have done the same.

I know of one phone that only allows 5 programmable numbers into the cell phone with no number pad, and an emergency number on it as well. It is good for only emergencies basically.

As I posted in the comments section:

Movies at 10 with other kids? Roaming throughout the city at 10-15? I don't think so.

Let's see. I was 10 in 1990. When I went to the movies, I went with my parents or with my friends and THEIR parents. They didn't just drop off us and let us meander around on our own. It seems as though parents today don't want to be bothered and want others to be babysitters for their children. They throw their kids a cell phone, drop them off at the movies or the mall and then go about their business (usually drinking low-fat lattes at Starbucks).

Whatever happened to parents taking responsibility for their underage children and looking after them instead of chucking the responsibility off on movie theaters, malls, cell phones, Xboxs, Playstations, etc.

And they wonder what's wrong with kids today and why they are preyed on so much. What do you expect when you drop your 12 year old off by herself at the mall looking like a street walker.

I say you get a cell phone when you start driving (not driving while talking of course) b/c at that point you are somewhat independent and have the ability to go places without as many restrictions limits.

Giving a cell phone to a someone younger is beyond ridiculous IMHO. What the *#&# do they need one for? If you can't drive anywhere, that means that you are being driven around by a responsible adult who most likely would have access to a phone if a problem should arise.

I guess I was just busier than you...from middle school on I was involved in open-ended after school activities where I was going to have to call for a ride home, and if I forgot to bring a quarter with me, I either had to bum one or call collect. A fixed-dial cellphone that I could use would have been pretty handy.

Me too. But I either rode the bus or made arrangements for my parents (or a friend's parents) to pick me up after school. My parents always knew where I was before I started driving. Once I started driving, they gave me a cell phone.

How did you make arrangements for a sporting event, practice or rehearsal that did not have a fixed end time? My parents knew where I was, but that didn't mean they wanted to drive over to pick me up only to learn that the director decided to keep us longer.

haha, I'm 17 and I wouldn't even think of asking my parents to get me a cell phone let alone pay for the plan. You guys think these things are rights. Get a job and pay for your own stuff, then maybe you will appreciate why your parents would want to limit your useage.

You guys think these things are privileges.

Ummm they ARE priviledges... not rights. I think you're mistaken... because everything else you said makes perfect sense.

I'm quite amazed that it took some carrier/supplier this long to develop such a product. Hell I loved they tossed GPS in that thing so I can pull em up on my PC any min I want.... Little Billy seems to be stopped behind that warehouse for a while...

You caught me. Crap and I thought I had checked it over for those stupid typos too.

I'm 17 as well and agree. I don't have a cell phone right now because my parents won't pay for it (I threw it out there once not expecting anything and was right 😛) and I'm too cheap to. My parents will be paying for the phone when I do get one, but only because that's going to be what I ask for for my birthday, I'm sure I'll be paying for the plan though. I'm constantly around kids my age that bitch and moan about how their parents took away their cell phone etc. I can't help but roll my eyes and walk away.
