how comes cars are electronically limited to a top speed?

What purpose does this serve? Or does it mean that the car at higher speeds is very dangerous or?

Or is it a law safety thing? But other cars go faster hten the AMG E55.....

nice read.

imagine a yuppie in a C5 being tailgated by a black E55 'family sedan' packed with parents and kids...
"Hey, dad, why is that car so slow?"
"I dunno, maybe he needs a supercharger."

German manufacturers (BMW, Merc, Audi...) have a "gentleman's agreement" where they limit the top-speed to 250km/h. I guess the point is that they will then concentrate on competing with other things instead of insane top-speeds (which are rather stupid thing to compete with). Of course, it's possible to remove that limitation...

Gentleman's agreements... well, seems like the Japanese agreement on limiting bhp to 300 is starting to fall to the wayside.
Some cars are electronically limited based on the tire rating of the stock tires too iirc (ie my car at 135).

The new Eclass Benzes darn near drive themselves... perfect for old rich folks that are experiencing a touch of senility coming on. :D

I believe the 250km speed limitation was entered into as a gentleman's agreement based on concerns that Germany would impose a speed limit on the Autobahn.
