in-dash PC

You could always just do like that guy over on the H did, and put a macmini in your dash with a retractable LCD to control it.

The real problem is getting something that can be run while driving - ie., a head up display on the lower windshield, and voice commands with a couple of steering wheel buttons.

Using a laptop really requires pulling over or having a co-pilot run the computer.

touchscreens are cheap enough. the build i have in my car looks amazingly close to stock and with computer, wiring, gps module, amps, screens (yes, there's a 10" in the back for the kids, too) switches for keyboarding system, power invertor, r/v camera & software, I'm still under $900.

Of course I spent a few days wiring and fabricating, but everything fits in pretty nicely, and no, there aren't parts everywhere in the car.

And yes. laptops aren't too practical in a car no matter how you hook the up. At least for the driver
