In concern to DNS

I am interested in getting a name for my web site. I have been reading all the places to register a name here http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=468975.


What I was wanting to know is, if by regersting my Name with them do they give me a DNS or can I use my ISP's DNS and my IP or do I have to run a DNS on my box and they just use my IP that my ISP assaigns me. My IP is static. If anyone has a link to any how to's on this that would also help a lot. Thanks

Some registrars allow you to manage the Zone File yourself, others do not. Those that do, maintain the DNS servers, and you can make whatever changes to the file that you need.

If by &quot;ISP&quot; you mean the company that will host the site, yes they have DNS servers. If you mean whomever you're connecting with, but NOT hosting with, no.

You could host your own DNS, but it is expensive and complicated.

Ok, so basically these companies, such as godaddy, just let you register your web site name and you have to find another company that gives you the DNS so that you can serve your webpage name out to the web?

Is there any free DNS servers out there or reletivly cheap ones?

many, if not most ISPs that you get any sort of DSL/data trunk services through will offer dns forwarding to one of your statics that you have with them.

This is probably one of the most favored options for people today.. being able to use your ISPs primary and secondary name servers which can typically handle a lot more than something you could put in your home or business.
