In China, internet restricted, bad times, etc

I have a machine back home with broadband, does anyone know if maybe I can make a proxy server with it? I tried using the online lists of proxy's but I don't know if they're blocked or what because they don't work very well....

It's my first time trying to get around the great (fire)wall of China so any suggestions would be most helpful ( I just want my Wikipedia n bittorrent capabilities back *cry*).

Hammyton, while I'm sure a lot of folks here sympathize with your situation, we do require that you follow the law. The things that are blocked in your country are blocked because your country's laws and government require it to be. There can be severe penalties for being caught breaking the law / circumventing that blocking. So we shouldn't help you do that.

It's no different than when someone asks "how do I break into a machine running <x>?" or "how can I circumvent my company's filters so I can run <x> on my work connection?" You should follow the laws / rules associated with where you are and how you're connecting to the network. If you don't like either, I suggest that you move to somewhere else with different laws or use an Internet connection without those restrictions.

Now, I personally have strong opinions about China's censorship. But that's something for the politics forum.

I disagree, I think he should be helped, it's not his fault that he lives in a repressive commie country.

I agree with Avi85. The quote "we do require that you follow the law" has quite far-reaching implications. Among others, this would mean that it would be OK for me to post instructions for hacking and writing vira if I was in international waters while I posted it.

Putting the core issue aside.

How do you know that the excuse is even Kosher?

The info given in public can be used anywhere, and the excuse can be a trick to entice help (I.e. it has Nothing to do with China).

Avi you are in principle justifying the Iranians providing help to Hezbollah because they ( the Iranians  ) think that the Hezbollah is right.

Principles, and Opinions should be kept in separate. In principle, you should not assist (especially in public) with illegal acts No matter what the excuse is.

I disagree.
Unless it's obviously against ethics, such as how to set up a kiddy porn site, we should help others w/ their technical needs.
If it's against your principle not to help them, don't help them. But you shouldn't be telling others whether or not they should help the OP.

Otherwise, this forum will get too political...how do you tell, and who gets to decide what's really illegal?
What's illegal for the commies and the Talibans could be well legal here in the States. (assuming this forum is set up in the US)

Hammyton, try search for other resources like Google...unless that's been censored by the government as well...

The odds of the OP and any friends getting caught aren't especially low, especially in view of the Chinese-subject title, public forum here, etc., and the OP's implicit acknowledgement of lack of networking knowledge.

So sadly, helping here publicly would likely be no help at all in the long run. And you should ask -- is the potential risk worth it for BT and Wiki? China is not particularly known for kind & gentle treatment of dissidents.

The issue is very simple. We do not help in issues that might compromise Networks. The fact that the OP stated "China" is irrelevant since there is No way to really check what he and other that would see the answer would really do with it. The fact that answer might be found on Google or Wiki is Not relevant either.

You want to help him privately. It is your business, and your ethical decision.

My post is related to help offered on a Publicly Open Forum.
