On previous trips, I've gone to:

Portillos (eh, wasn't crazy about the Italian Beef sammiches)

Fogo de Chao (keep the Filet Mignon coming!)

Big Bowl (great Thai food)

Bistro Voltaire (I think)

Giordanos (wow is that a lot of cheese stuffed in there)

So where to spend the company's dime this time around? I love all food, only issue I have is a shellfish allergy that recently reared it's ugly head.

Mercadito. Mexican tapas. Best service that I've had in the city and amazing food and drink. Ask for kiki or rafa as a server and say that Bob from Bar Louie sent you.

Found the place by meeting the executive chef at my bar. To make reservations I called the frickin chef direct, awesome establishment from top down.

I was always a big fan of Shaw's Crab House - great seafood (but of course, you may avoid it just because of the shellfish stuff)

Not bad. GT oyster is like a half mile west. I love oyster happy hour on Wednesdays at Bennys.

Hot Doug's

Hot Doug's is frequently featured in local and national media for its unique menu, and its purveyor and head chef, Doug Sohn, has been noted for his work to create affordable gourmet food.[1] The restaurant is an extremely popular dining destination among both locals and tourists, and at lunch time and throughout much of the weekend customers can expect to wait in lines sometimes exceeding an hour just to get in the door.

Accolades

Hot Doug's won a 2006 Good Eating award from the Chicago Tribune, which noted the restaurant's "cult status" among hot dog aficionados.

Hot Doug's has been featured as a Critics Pick on CBS, NBC, ABC, and the Travel Channel, and was featured in the Chicago episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. He has also been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Bon Appetit, The Chicago Tribune, The Sun Times, Time Out Chicago and many other publications. Hot Doug's is highly rated by The Zagat Survey and is included in many of its Top Lists including Food Tops and Best Buys. Bon Appetit listed it as one of the 50 Best Restaurants on the Planet.[3] The editors of Citysearch Chicago named Hot Doug's the 2006 Editorial Winner for Best Chicago Hot Dog.[4] The restaurant also received a 2007 Best Hot Dog honors in a reader poll conducted by the magazine Time Out Chicago.[5]

Cuisine

Hot Doug's features a diverse and rotating menu that includes the traditional Chicago dog, to more exotic items such as the "Game of the Week", a rotating selection of game-animal sausages. The menu also features several specials that rotate over time. Some specials that have been featured include Calvados Infused Duck Sausage with Apple Mustard; Beef and Lamb Gyros Sausage with Artichoke Tzatziki, Kalamata Olives and Feta Cheese; and White Wine and Dijon Rabbit Sausage with Sauce Moutarde and Tilsiter Cheese.[2] Most of the items on the menu - both specials and regulars - are named after a celebrity, a well-known Chicago personality, or friends and relatives of owner Doug Sohn. Examples include the "Elvis" (polish sausage), the "Brigitte Bardot" (spicy andouille sausage), and the "Charlie and James Sohn" (mini bagel dogs and tater tots). The names attached to the permanent menu items are changed frequently but usually maintain a consistent theme: iconic Hollywood sex symbols, legendary comedians, famous Chicago Cubs baseball players, and so on. Hot Doug's is also notable for its "duck fat fries", served on Fridays and Saturdays only, in which the potatoes are deep fried in oil rendered in duck fat.

I've got Giordanos on tap for tomorrow night; somehow I haven't ever been during one of my many trips. Looking forward to it.

If the company is paying, then you should go to Alinea or Everest. I wouldn't bother with Frontera, we were very disappointed when we went there.

girl and the goat. kuma's or hot doug's. If I were to leave chicago those 3 would be on the top of my list to hit once again before I'm gone.

Fogo de chao is nothing special, its a big chain. Big Bowl is junk asian fusion food like PF changs or Panda Express. Portillos is ok, wouldn't go out of my way for it.

I prefer lou malnati's over giordanos but that's a personal preference more than anything else.

Probably not realistic. One of my friends tried to get a res there a couple weeks ago....they laughed in his face and asked how June sounded.

Go early, its harder to get a reservation than if you just walk in. The wait is ~1.5 hours on a week night and you can wait/sit at the bar area when it opens up. The bar is full service so if you find a good spot for you and your coworkers you can just eat there instead.

If you're eating alone, it'll be really easy to find a place to pop down for a good meal at the bar. ~30 minute wait tops.

I am not sure where you are staying, but Wildfire is a favorite place of mine. If one of those meals is breakfast, I suggest Yolk, but they are always busy, so be prepared to wait. There is also a really nice tapas place by Halsted and Morgan. The owner is from Spain. Their sangrias are delicious.

I'll have to keep that in mind. I've been to Little Goat and while good I wasn't convinced Girl and the Goat was going to be worth the trouble. Though I admit to having been sidetracked by Au Cheval lately...

I agree on frontera. However if you want mexican and don't mind the burbs Mago is very good. Salsa 17 as well. Everyone has a favorite pizza joint. I like Ginos 'cause of the corn bread crust. Ditkas has some pretty good food, but is super spend- but on the company dime...

One fun one- Kuma's Corner. Its a metal themed bar with the most amazing burgers I've ever tasted. Its like... elston and california ish... IIRC.

Kuma's opened a 2nd location at Diversey and Clark. Much easier to get to for out of towners.
