The difference between smart people and stupid people, is smart people do something stupid then never do it again. I see these young kids all the time on sport bikes, wearing no gear, going over 150km/h on the expressway, some cases up to 200 or more. Cops don't even care at that point. If you hit any other vehicle going at that speed, you're not going to come out the other end in one piece. Quite literally.

Unfortunately, those guys give other bikers a bad name. Even the Hell's Angels wear full leathers.

Where do you work where you can wear overpants?

....you take them off when you get to work :p

i work in a consulting company. i have an office, but we conveniently also have bathrooms on premises that can be used to change attire as well.

at the end of the day, does it matter who is at fault?

shoulda, coulda, woulda... she didn't have proper gear and she didn't walk away with barely a scratch. I would argue she was lucky to even walk afterwords. Lucky she had the helmet on.

Just look at the stories posted here. we all know people that crashed on bikes. we all know people that have been in car accidents. I will argue it's just a matter of time before we all are in motor vehicle accident. No way will I be without my cage surrounding me when/if it's my turn

Absolutely it does. If I know that excessive speed and poor braking skills cause 40% of motorcycle crashes I can work on my braking technique and maybe use some of that knowledge to listen to my inner voice telling me to dial it back a bit.

As for the rest of your post... You could always choose not to ride I suppose. :whiste:

This. I have a tank bag and I can fit a neatly folded dress shirt or polo shirt, slacks and a pair of dress shoes in it quite easily.

I hear ya, there is a tuner car shop right down the road from me... mostly imports, more recently some domestics. now that it's summer, see a lot of street bikes in and out of the place. it's a two lane road leading in, 50mph limit. I drive tuner cars and these riders see me heading home and they will pace me for a bit, then hit it hard up to about 70-80 and pull a wheelie. They are usually wearing helmets, but mostly in shorts and a tank or a t-shirt. Just waiting for one of them to dump.

I have more than a healthy respect for a motorcycle which is why I don't ride. I trust myself, but not every other dipsh!t on the road

why does it matter? You do something stupid, you crash and die or someone else does something stupid, you crash and die.... you're still dead. That's all I am getting it.

I don't ride for many reasons. I'll take my chances/risks in other aspects of my life, not on a bike.

Fine, that's your choice. :colbert:

it is my choice....

why am I posting? because it goes far beyond wearing the right gear. I think the message is skewed towards proper gear and throwing a "start seeing motorcycles" sticker on your car and riding is pretty safe. It's one thing to hedge your bet by doing what you can (gear/riding safe), but there's way more to it.

I'm not saying don't ride. what I'm saying is, don't come out and bitch and moan if you crash regardless of whether you did something stupid or some blonde chick cuts you off in her range rover..... those bad drivers are part of the equation that I don't think a lot of riders factor in properly.

It kind of sounds like that's what you're saying.

And who is bitching and moaning? Well, besides you of course. :whiste:

I agree, and I'll leave it at that.

but REALLY REALLY SMART people learn from other peoples mistakes and dont do it in the first place. Geniuses probably realize that there are too many elements out of their control and avoid riding all together... or driving for that matter. Or flying. Or anything fun.

Okay, you win the thread.

And I'll give up motorcycling... you've convinced me. Now I'll be around longer to post here for many many many more years.

Anyone want to buy a 2012 Ducati Monster 1100 with 15,000 miles on it? It's a one owner bike.

Riding is risky. You learn that in the msf. I get on my bike knowing the risk just as much as I know the risk of jumping out of an airplane.

I agree either the rider or someone else can always do something dumb and sometimes it won't work out in your favor, but wearing gear vs no gear makes a difference. It may not if you are going 120mph on a public street or some guy in a truck cuts a light and tbones you full speed at an intersection, but most of the times accidents occur at less than 50mph and if you are geared up you can escape without broken bones or road rash.

I will never ride without my race boots or overpants. I wear them over jeans no matter the weather. They may not feel like they will protect much but they do since jeans immediately get destroyed as soon as you hit asphalt.

I make sure to wear my sunglasses if it's bright out. Oh and I'm surrounded by a steel frame with crumple zones in case of an accident. Gave up riding when I realized all the good roads have cops waiting around the corner with a radar gun and people couldn't give two shits about you and your bike, family, and life.

Luckily cops have never bothered me. I don't think I've had my bike inspected since I've done most of the work myself and I've never been pulled over like i have in a car for similar reasons.

im not trying to convince you of anything other than riding is at least as dangerous as you think it is. Riders seem to think that if it is a driver that is at fault then, then accident should have been avoided....or at least it wasn't my fault (as a rider).... guess what, dead is dead, crippled is crippled.

I understand the need for fun or whats the point of living if you just huddle in your bunker. That's fine for a lot of things in life, but riding a bike; just a matter of when, not 'if'.

I don't wish harm on anyone, but I hope for all the riders out there I don't ever have an opportunity to say I told you so. Your life, your choices, hope you and your friends/family can live with them

It's clear to me that you value my life more than I do. Please... tell me what to do with my life.

you keep blowing it off like I am telling you you can't ride.

ride to your hearts content... I'm just sick of hearing a bunch of BS crying and bitching when riders go down. Just had a friend in my car club kiss a guard rail and mess himself up pretty good -> shoulder, wrist, pelvis, hip. He'll be down for months, his wife will be taking care of him, he can't work.. all for what?

my sis in law just finds out shes pregnant... off on the bike she goes, heck, they would stop by my house with no helmets on. I said, hey, let me take out a life insurance policy on both of you. Does it matter to them if they die? sure, but who would it really impact, their friends and family.

I see your attitude about the whole thing and you try to trivialize the danger and my posts about it, that's fine. It isn't me on the bike.... and won't be me on the bike when the time comes. I say that hoping your time never comes.

This has the feel of those people that come to try and convert you to their religion lol.

I don't think some people get it. Like I said those who ride accept the risk.

Going around preaching that it's dangerous and that it happens to everyone is pretty pointless and bleak.

Newsflash!!! Riding bikes will likely increase the chances you'll get hurt or die in a motorycle accident!!! No wayyy I wouldn't have guessed!

Welp, since you made the choice to get on a bike and ride it, you should probably wear some leather if you enjoy your skin on your body. Why is there a debate in here about riding vs who's at fault vs herpaaaaderrrppp bikes go fast!! It's obvious if you're on a bike, you've accepted that risk...so... Yeah.

@jules, you know.. there is this thing called ignoring a person. Maybe if you did it, you could stop debating topics that aren't worth debating.

Ugh - I wish her well but I will not be watching that. This is just one of the reasons I prefer fast cars to motorcycles.

I don't believe that is true for the majority of riders. it may be true for people here.

A proper rider takes the MSF course. That's the first thing they tell you day 1 in the course. As riders you have to accept the risk.

It is not bad, no hospital stuff only healed scars. Does not take much imagination though and I think it is a great message.

I'm right there with you bro. I was hoping he might get the hint and stop posting in this thread but clearly he feels he has to have the last word.

Rode to work this morning. Traffic was fuxored on the 15 due to a jackknifed big rig. 15 miles of solid gridlock. Still took me over an hour to get here on the bike. My boss said it took him 2 hours to get here by car and he lives closer than I do.

On a side note, I am thinking of starting a new men's cologne... I am going to call it Eau de Motorcycle Exhaust because that's what I smell like right now.
