my toshiba satellite had an odd display problem where the display would stay VERY dark unless i tap a little a button that gets depressed when closing the cover (the one that triggers suspend mode).

to sum it up
1) locate the inverter which resides in the display panel
2) MAKE SURE YOU DISCHARGE STATIC ON YOUR BODY BY TOUCHING A METAL PART. panel hinge works.
3) unscrew the screw that holds the inverter
4) pull and untwist the left cable and try reseating the connector
5) if above doesnt do the trick, order a new inverter and replacet the old one
