im leaving tomorrow for an office visit in nova.
heres part of the schedule.

Thursday, November 3, 2005
3:00 p.m Check in to Hotel
6:30 p.m. Reception and Dinner
9:00 p.m. Team Building (optional)

is it really optional? i feel like it's almost guaranteed that if you want to get a job, you should show up to the team building.

It's a ploy to weed out people who don't realize optional means mandatory.

you don't want to skip any events during an office visit

it's a time for the firm to wine and dine you so you'll sign

for a job interview? no.

but if my company, in which I have a fairly secure job, had an optional team building workshop, you're damn sure I'd blow it off :)

I have a friend in management consulting that once told me that "team building" is expense-account-speak for getting ripped at the bar.

Don't work for a company that plays mind games.

Yep, you're marked as "not a team player" "does not contribute to the team"

yup as I thought :p

I mean honestly I have never heard of a company that would do anything else at 9 at night it just doesn't make sence. its prolly more of an opportunity for you to relax and get to know people (get drunk and have fun)

Why even call it a stupid name like team building? Just call it like it is, lets all get plastered at the bar.

You can't expense out " we got plastered at the bar", but you can expense out "we partook in a team building excercise"

You've definitely got that right. One place I worked at, who treated the whole department like we were total scumbags constantly was putting out propaganda about how we can "help the team reach new heights", and how we "Can make the team something really special", and on and on. When managment ordered us to do something, and it turned out to be a disaster, who got crapped on, by the big bosses? Us.

The place I work at now is kind of the same way. We do something, and it doesn't turn out due to the programmers screwing up, we get bitched at, the programmers get raises!

Team my ass.
