In almost every video game, we are killing, beating or destroying something.

Geez.

I feel like we've gotten so used to it that we don't notice how violent games actually are.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - killing / beating people
Skyrim - tons of killing
The Witcher 2 - tons of killing
Batman: Arkham City - tons of beating up
BF3 - tons of killing
Rage - tons of killing
Dead Island - tons of killing

--------

I'd like to see a major release that doesn't involve such things. Someone needs to come up with a game that isn't a sports or racing game and doesn't involve killing.

It could be a subconscious thing, where we actually like to kill things, and video games gives us that satisfaction...

CitiesXL 2011 (the most modern incarnation if the SimCity series I am aware of; got it for cheap during the Steam summer camp sale).

Monkey Island series (the "enhanced editions" are available, all in semi-acceptable 3D, as well as the more recent "Tales of Monkey Island" series)

Sam & Max, similar to Monkey Island.

... Well, that's it. I'm out. Those are the only games in my library that aren't violent.

I know there are other similarly non-violent adventure games out there (usually comedy ones) and "Tycoon" type games, but I don't have anything else in my steam account aside from all of Monkey Island and Sam & Max and CitiesXL 2011.

Many of the most popular stories/books have violence in them too, it's not just a video games thing. People want dramatic stories with protagonists and antagonists, adventure and risk, love and death, etc.

Also, Portal.

Tetris
Any of the thousands of puzzle games.
Sports games
Building theme sims (except RTS "tribe" type games).

There are plenty out there, but killing is more popular. I would be more interested to discuss the upturn of the "you're the bad guy killer" storylines in the recent years.

Most of us understand the difference between video games and real life, and the few of us who don't are pretty much screwed no matter what.

Psychologists sometimes argue it has more to do with survival instinct and an innate desire to prepare for the worst. Even little kids' fairy tales are violent and provide endless warnings about what to avoid like evil giants (i.e-adults). In fact, little kids tend to have nightmares about the exact same kinds of hazards our cave dwelling ancestors faced like lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) suggesting even our dreams try to prepare us for the worst.

Violence is also an easy way to get the audience's attention and keep it. A cheap thrill like a roller coaster ride that gets the heart pumping. Video game characters have limited facial expressions and body language, so violence makes for an effective substitute for the kinds of things the technology just isn't good enough to use to get the audience's attention.

Just looking at my Steam list, here are games that have no objective to kill, destroy or beat something up:

Railroad Tycoon 2
Railroad Tycoon 3
Big Brain Wolf
Chime
Cogs
Diamond Dan
Eufloria (may be debatable)
Ghost Master
Gish
The Great Art Race
Puzzle Bots
Puzzle Pirates
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3
Sam & Max 301, 302, 303, 304 and 305
SimCity 4
Uplink
VVVVVV
World of Goo

There are others that are iffy, like Civ 4 and Civ 5 (assuming game settings are right and you get lucky no one ever attacks you).

You only see games that contains violence, while there are lots of games that contains no violence at all. Ever played GT? Guitar Freaks?

There are lots of games like that. I guess you just didn't find them exciting enough to try. You've been playing violent games, haven't you? Are you going to give them up, and go play Nancy Drew games?

They make violent games, because people like violent games.

Building and transport sims, puzzle games, dance and rhythm games, adventure games . . . the nonviolence is out there, you just are too busy wading in entrails to see it. Spit out the intestines you've been chewing on and play some Bejeweled?

Me, I have a blight to stop. Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!

Dead island really isnt killing. I mean, they are zombies, which are undead, but they aren't really alive either. They are reanimated, thats all.

We are doing them a favor.

This rant is fail... see above umpteen posts for reasons why.

What can't you do IRL? Generally speaking, all the crazy shit we do in video games.

This is why I don't enjoy the Sims, I can watch myself take a piss or shower every day.
