In 2002, unwed black women gave birth to nearly 70% of the black children born that year.

From USA Today: Column about Bill Cosby's comments

From the Column:

"Let's talk black." That's what Jesse Jackson used to say to black reporters when he wanted to have an off-the-record discussion about an issue that he thought was too racially sensitive to be discussed in front of others.

In 2002, unwed black women gave birth to nearly 70% of the black children born that year. That same year, 12% of black men in their 20s and 30s were in jail or prison. In 2001, 50% of black high school students graduated.

Too many liberals believe that racism is the only culprit here; and too many conservatives think the blame rests entirely on the people who are the faces behind these awful statistics. The truth, I'm convinced, is somewhere in between. But personal responsibility, where the biggest breakdown seems to have occurred, is the piece of this troubling puzzle that blacks can exercise the most control over.

I knew the rates were high, but freaking 70% of black children were born outside of marriage in 02'?

Man, I still lead a sheltered life:(

Nice to see someone finally realizes where some of the problems come from. Blacks aren't the victims of everyone. They have been hamped by racism in the past and still today as well, but they also cause a lot of their own problems.

yeah Cosby has Always been generous. i would think with someone like Cosby as a moral leader for the Black community it would do way better then great people like jackson and sharpton. they just parrot what people want to hear not what they need to hear.

the "breakdown" in our educational system is as much the result of an increase of single parent families as it is the so called "breakdown".

interestingly enough black kids make up a large %age of children of single parent families.

there is a connection here whether it want's to be acknowledged or not.

No one wants to. A mom or dad's happiness and selfish is more important than the child's education.

Fortunately for me, my mom hung in until I was a sophomore in college, despite the fact she wanted to leave earlier.

Well welfare pays on how many kids you have. So the mother has no reason not to pop another kid out. It's a few hundred bucks extra for her a month.

Yeah, but that's silly, because a child easily costs a few hundred dollars more a month...

for most of us it does. for these welfare mothers, it doesn't. they get charity from churches, organizations, get daycare for free etc.

those of us that actually work for a living and care about our children, sure we spend more than a couple hundred / month.

Raised correctly, a child costs that much... but they arent exactly doing much for the kids.

Why do you think they had to invent a new term, "baby-daddy"? "Husband", "ex-boyfriend", etc, are not terms you can apply to the guy you had sex with one night, never saw again, and ended up pregnant because you are too stupid to make him wear a condom.

Depends on where you live. Around here, St. Lawrence County NY, the AVERAGE employed income is... $11k a year. Second poorest county in NY, next to Franklin, and it isn't by much at all.

Now, breaking this down, my family's income is around $50k/15k, dad/mom income, and we can literally live like we're rich.

Now, no kid eats $50 in food a week, even eating really well and healthy, if you bargain shop.... you can cut corners, and realize half of these kids aren't living right or healthy, and are getting fed $010 a can spaghettios at each meal, and it is actually profitable to be on welfare

well then they are really stupid! since Welfare now has a set amount (no matter how many kids you have) not to mention you can be on it for only 2 years.

bummer. what is they going to do the other 16 years?

granted what you say is true a few years ago. Now they have to work etc to keep welfare.

i wonder if black people think Cosby is now "white" because he's placing at least part of the blame on the people themselves.

On another note, i think this is a big reason why i stopped listening to hip hop. Remember LL Cool J and Run DMC? Or even Dr. Dre back in the day? I dunno, it just seems to me that those old school guys were more about the music than today's artists. Today it's all about the "bling bling" and the "i want to be a thug" attitude. I didn't even really mind the early "gangsta" rap and everything until new artists started to do it SOLELY because they thought it was "cool." Today's hiphop reeks of poser-syndrome to me. Just my $.02.

Perhaps the number is too high, Jesse tends to make up stuff to back up his stance. Otherwise, he's right
about blacks should look at themselves to improve their lives. I work in a small town, where most of the people are white and histpanics, and they're having the same problems that Jesse is talking about. A lot of teenage girls are pregnant with no job, and the boys seem to drink themselves to jail.
