Improving DSL speeds.

Is there a method to improve dsl speeds in Windows 2000? I know there are some reg settings that can improve performace with dial-up connections, I was wondering if there was something similar for dsl with PPPoE.

One more thing, dsl speed is limited in the modem or in the dslam at the CO? Could I hack into the modem and make it faster?

Download DrTCP: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dslre
ports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe">http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe</a>

Run the program, it will show the current settings of the TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change back to your original values.

Start with:

MaxMTU - 1492 for DSL

Tcp Receive - 255552

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

No, nothing you can do to "hack" into the Modem. Don't hack into anything. All DSL Modems are capable of a minimum of 6 meg download speed to the DSL spec. Most can do between 6-10 meg. The ISP's have the DSLAM ports throttled to various speeds, most at 1.5 meg. This year they are introducing mulitiple speed thresholds anywhere from 128K, 348K, 512, 768 etc at varying price points ranging from 29.95 to 89.95 or higher. Still none anywhere near what the DSL Modems can do. When I was on the design team of the first DSL Modem I never envisioned this purposeful slowing down of the technology. 🙁
