I don't understand why when I open a new windows explorer window it needs to hash to disk always. Sometimes I'll open one explorer window do some file manipulations, close it, only to open it 15 minutes later and it needs to go to disk again. Same with favorites, search and lots of other things. Any fix for this type of behavior? Windows just does'nt cache the OS and file system very well IMO.
Anand sorta mentions what I'm talking about in his os X article:
"What I found in my time with the G5 and OS X was that it does a marvelous job of caching, to the point where after the first time I start the machine, I rarely hear the hard drive being accessed. Furthermore, I definitely don't feel as slowed down by it as I do under Windows. Again, I feel a bit lost writing this without a complete understanding of how Apple architected the caching system of OS X, but the results are positive and noticeable.
Well I'm always accessing the HD. Are there any tweaks/regedit settings to improving these problems?
My specs are Athlon 64 w/1024 MB RAM
Windows 2000 SP4 and all updates
All drives running UDMA
