i've 2 walls between the wifi router and my desktop PC. using cat5 or moving the desktop arent options. however, after walking ard with my laptop, i've realised that if i stand in the door way (only 1 wall between laptop and router) of the 2nd room, i get good enough coverage.

my idea is to get a PCI 802.11 adaptor that allow me to drag the antenna over to the doorway. do most pci cards do that? i checked dlink and linksys websites but they dont say if thats possible with their 802.11g PCI adaptors. anyone?

Most PCI Wireless has removable external Antenna.

However you would need coax extension. Depending on the length it can be expensive, and if it long you might lose the gains.

You are much better of paying a little more and getting a Repeater or a Group Bridge, and put it next to the door.

These pages as elaborate information that in part applies to your situation.

darn, looks like there's no simple/cheap solution to this ... how about a usb 802.11 adaptor with a long usb cable? unless my old di-524 can become a wireless bridge client, an AP/gateway/linksys-sveasoft solution isnt gonna be cheap ...

inside the wireless settings on your access point device, there should be an option that allows you to change broadcast channels, much like you would on a cordless phone. Try changing channels to see if you get a better signal.
