Improved stability with new settings...

Hi -

Ok, I looked around here at AnandTech and over at Corsair's support (houseofhelp.com) and came up with more memory settings. There were in fact, tons of messages about these modules and I'm not sure if I'll keep these (although my first reaction is to try and make them work, I've always liked Corsair). Right now its been running without crashing for 3 days at 2-2-2-5 and 8burs, using the 1006 bios. I'd like to move on an start overclocking and try a good TMPG render, but can't seem to find the settings. Admittedly, I'm a real newbie at overclocking and I'd appreciate and pointers to sites or messages for suggestions on how/where/which settings to change. TIA.

Which mainboard? To test stability first run memtest86 for a good 8 hours (be sure to hit C and enable all tests). If it passes with no errors I then suggest loading up Prime95 (if you are using a P4 "C" be sure to load it twice, and change the affinity so each runs on a separate logical CPU, 0 and 1) and run the torture test for 8-10+ hours. If you want, add View specperf 7.0 in the foreground to max out graphics card usage and memory addressing.

If it passes this it is stable. 2-2-2-5-8burst is the tightest memory timings possible, as you overclock to will likely have to drop these depending on the memory bus speed.

Hi Gramboh -

Caught your reply while I checking a tracking # at UPS. The m/b is an Asus P4c800 deluxe with the 1006 bios (the latest as of today), with 512 megs of Corsair Twinx 3200 LL Cas 2 memory, and a P4c 2.4 cpu chip, using WinXP Pro. The problem is the memory timings in the chips, there's a bunch of posts here and on Corsair's site(s) about these, and the problem appears to be on Corsair's end. The settings I used are 2-2-2-5 with an 8 clock burst setting. Dram voltage is set at 2.75, and the other voltage settings are all at default settings. Video card is and ATI A-I-W 9700 Pro. Bios lock setting for that is at 66/33, since that's the one most often mentioned (from what I've seen at least) successfully. I tested the memory last week for 13 hours using Goldmemory. It failed each test then, but another (shorter) test at these settings showed everything in the green.

At this time the system seems stable. Its been up continuously for 3 days and I just started a long render with TMPG, to confirm that impression. What I'd like to move on to, is to actually o/c this system. I keep looking around A/T and some other places but haven't really seen anything that says, "use this setting here, this one there," etc. I know eventually I'll find a site that has it, its just taking me longer to find it than I would have thought. Any ideas or referrals?
