Improperly laced shoes

I've purchased a couple pair of nice shoes recently and found that the department store (Nordstroms) laced them up incorrectly. I bought a pair of Oxfords on Saturday and the store had laced them up with a criss-cross pattern which left the shoe with very little lace for tying and makes loosening for inserting your foot more difficult. I changed to a straight lace pattern. Looks much better and is easier to loosen for removing the shoe and for putting it on.

Do you know how to properly lace dress shoes?

This is proper.

These things were laced at the factory.

I asked a sales man why they were laced that way and I always needed to re lace them. He said it was faster to do it that way.

It's worst when dress shoes are not properly polished or not polished at all.

Meh, "Straight Bar" is the only correct answer for laced dress shoes.

I don't own any dress shoes, but I've been doing ladder lacing for the last twenty years or so.

That's one thing I like about my job I can pretty much wear whatever footwear I want. I can even put shorts in summer.

Lots of changes happening though, they're trying to make our department more "professional" so I have a bad feeling some of that stuff might change. :/

I don't wear that type of shoes, either Boots for work and Sneakers for comfort. Life is too short for suits or dress shoes. :)

I just wear slacks and a dress shirt or polo shirt, no jackets or ties. I like the Oxfords though and wear them pretty much every day. They are comfortable and they look nice.

I wear boat shoes most of the rest of the time (Sperry Top Siders mostly-I have a few pairs of them). I don't wear sneakers unless I'm hiking or walking for exercise.

A button front shirt is only a button down shirt if it has a button down collar.

I have tried the straight lace shoe pattern. It sucks royally.

1) Since I don't have wide feet, there is so much extra lace that I step on it non-stop. The result is constantly untied shoes and/or the need for massive ugly double/triple knots. No matter what, the laces shred in a few weeks of wear due to be stepped on non-stop.

2) Straight laces need to be redone every other wear, otherwise they shift and you have one end of the lace that is maybe 1 inch long and the other end is maybe 5 feet long. This is because pulling on both ends of the lace does not give an equal pull in the center of the string through the lopsided lacing technique.

Your shoes should come with laces of appropriate length for this lacing pattern. If not and they're too long then that lacing pattern is probably not appropriate for that shoe. The laces that came with my shoes were too short for a criss-cross lacing pattern and I barely had enough length left to tie them. Changing to the straight lace pattern gave me the perfect length of lace to tie the shoe. Nothing is dragging on the ground.

TIL there are shoelace snobs

It's not snobbery. I'm just pointing out that when you buy shoes you may run into help who don't really know how to lace a shoe properly. I ran into this at Nordstrom's of all places. I'm not sure if the guy who was helping me laced the shoes this way or if a customer who had previously tried them on did this. Last pair of shoes I bought I purchased online and didn't come laced so I had to figure out the best way to lace them.

Just trying to help my fellow ATOT'ers out. ;)
