<< That is a C-130 cargo plane with jet assist. JATO (jet assist take off) >>

What? In the first video? No.

that pilot had some serious skill. you saw how he kept the plane level for several hundred feet, and then pulled up close to 90 deg? :Q

a larger airliner once landed at ohio state's airfield once, thinking it was columbus's airport... had to bring in a special crew to get it back out. probably did damn near the same thing.

anyhow... probably easy to do that when you're running completely empty... i wouldn't want to fly that far down the run way at 50 feet though. scary.

Go watch the E-4B's at STRATCOM Headquarters. Those 747 bodies do this on a daily basis as part of their training.

Yep, pretty cool. Accelerating to minimum lift, then riding ground effect until rotation followed by a high angle of attack climbing turn. It's a common training maneuver for soft-field takeoff, but you don't normally see it with a plane of this class.

<< Remember the A320 plowing through the woods at an airshow? AFAIK it was from the pilots not understanding the autoflight systems. >>

Actually the crash happened because the onboard computers locked the pilots out. They couldn't pull up or climb out.
It's got to be a pretty nasty feeling being a pilot and not having full, immediate control.

I'm not all that impressed. Any plane could do the same sort of thing.

The pilot did a short field takeoff and stayed in ground effect to build up speed. When he had sufficient kinetic engery, yanked back on the stick and all that energy makes the plane go up in a hurry.

The same thing could be done in any airplane.

Although I'm sure it's a lot more fun in a big plane like that. :D

<< That's pretty cool. Not as cool as the shots of the F-15 standing on its tail and accelerating upward, but for a plane that big it is impressive. >>

almost any plane can do that. he was in the air for 11 seconds picking up speed before he pulled up, and then he climed 1,000 feet or so (in an empty plane) before he levelled off.

If you want to see something impressive, watch a pitts S2C or a Sukhoi SU-31 takeoff vertically.

sukhoi videos.
