Impossible to get perfect convergence with this monitor

I have an IBM P275 which uses the Sony G520 tube I think. The convergence is always off somewhere on the screen no matter how I adjust the 4 settings. I've been fiddling with the 4 convergence settings for hours already, still can't get perfect convergence. Anyone here ran into the same problem and found a solution?

I have a 21" Compaq branded that I have to use at work with the same problem. I've been on vacation and can't remember the model number right now, but I believe it uses a Sony tube also.

I'd be interested in some software that would assist me in adjusting the convergence. I suspect it's too old and half worn out to be made any better though.

Wish I had and answer for you.

convergence = focus of the colors. when the convergence is off, it means the colors don't focus on one point, and thus you would see a reddish or bluish color next to lines and text

In the old days and I assume these days you would set convergence via tabs on the neck of the tube itself.

I used to do this on RGB displays back in the day. You need to bring up the grid/cross-hatch test pattern. Then you need to slice the silicon goop/sealer that they used at the factory to lock the tabs in place. (If they even locked them).....

I don't recommend that you attempt this.... 1.) you don't know what you are doing??. 2.) You can fry yourself. 3.) due to #1 you could make the problem worse.

Oh... Don't know how old that display is, but IBM has a kick ass monitor warranty. Give them a call if you dipplay is within 3 years old.... see what they say.

Exellent, I just started a thread on my HP A4033A (Sony tube) right before I saw yours.

When you are discussing convergence it is important that you differentiate between dynamic and static. Static convergence is adjusted with the magnets on the neck and is primarily set for the center of the screen. Dynamic convergence is set with electronic controls and is associated with the edges and corner areas. Really high quality monitors like the F980 Eizo has adjustments for 256 discreet areas of the screen. With anything less you must expect uncorrectable errors. For the best information get an old color TV repair textbook.

=\ It could also just simply be a problem with the convergence board on the monitor, and not a simple adjustment.

My toshiba 43" hdtv's convergence board went out last night -.- its on the way to the repair shop first thing tomorrow.

yes I only have 4 adjustments, but some parts of the screen are really bad. This being such a high end monitor, I expected a lot more. My old Hitachi 21" 1996 monitor had better convergence!

Hunt around some of the TV repair shops and see if one has a color burst generator if they do let them fix it.

I used a little OpenGL program called "Convergence 1.0" to get mine as close as possible, it is either off in the center and lined up on either side or vise-versa. The picture is much better than it used to be but still not good enough for a daily use monitor.
What would a "color burst generator" do?

That is the big problem with the Sony tubes that everyone ignored when raving about their monitors.

yeah I wish people have told me...
grr this convergence is horrible! Contrast and vibrance is awesome though, so is the sharpness of the text, but the convergence is just unbearable.

I just got a replacement from IBM. Their replacement support service is awesome. Called them up, immediately 2nd day air one to my house, along with a billable stamp so I can send my old one back at their cost.
