Squeeze two of the parallel pieces together. Pull opposite side perpendicular piece out.

Its not impossible. One of my friends have wooden puzzles like that. All the pieces interact and it seems impossible to put together and take apart. However, all you have to do is shift the pieces in such a way that a single edge gets loose. Then its all easy from there

You could get it together with a mallet, which it looks like is what they did based on the indentations.

smack a piece of wood so that it cracks in half. Assemble & apply a fine amount of wood glue to the surface that needs to be rejoined. Just a little touch-up with sandpaper & you'd never know it had been broken.

It's a very simple version of the chinese box puzzle. One side slides enough to move another side into the notch. After moving all four sides one notch, the original side slides off.

Why does looking at the picture of the puzzle 'boggle your mind'? That's what someone would say after physically manipulating it and trying to solve it.

one side just slides out, then the rest come apart 1 by 1 in a specific order.
