Importing with out moving

I have 500gb external HDD that has all my photos (387 gb) and I enjoy working in Aperture but right now when I import my photos Aperture moves them to its own folder, my macbook only has a 160 gb hdd and I do small video editing so it is not permissible to copy them to my HDD

Is there a way to organize my photo's and use almost all of apertures features but keep them on my external HDD?

yes... I'm not infront of my computer, but when you import, top right should be an option of where to import (or just leave it alone, which is what you want to do).

also look in the preferences to change the default behavior of this.
